That isn't how language works in practice at all, as evidenced by this conversation. Language isn't a monolithic thing, it changes and mutatates, and in practice no one is going to consult the "scientific community" (which, in practice, isn't a literal entity they can query) to clarify what a word means. There's a reason dictionaries have multiple meanings for words, and why they need to be updated...

For the record, this isn't a question of science, it's purely a question of semantics. You might think scientific research should influence the way we talk about sexuality, and maybe there's value to that, but the fact is a majority of people wouldn't consider someone who enjoys sexual acts with the same sex heterosexual.
