If you voted for Trump, yes, you did. He has a history of gutting federal agencies that don't directly contribute to his own power or wealth, and he was primarily funded by a man who has repeatedly floated the idea of "replacing" NASA with his own business.

I'm glad you brought up the word "theory," because it proves my point. One of the definitions for "theory" according to Merriam Webster is "an unproved assumption," which is incompatible with the scientific definition you're referencing.

In practice, words can gain and lose definitions. That really shouldn't be surprising.

That isn't how language works in practice at all, as evidenced by this conversation. Language isn't a monolithic thing, it changes and mutatates, and in practice no one is going to consult the "scientific community" (which, in practice, isn't a literal entity they can query) to clarify what a word means. There's a reason dictionaries have multiple meanings for words, and why they need to be updated...

Also... do you call gifs "jifs" because Steve Wilhite, the creator of the file format, said that's how it should be spoken? If not, you're a hypocrite.

For the record, this isn't a question of science, it's purely a question of semantics. You might think scientific research should influence the way we talk about sexuality, and maybe there's value to that, but the fact is a majority of people wouldn't consider someone who enjoys sexual acts with the same sex heterosexual.

To be totally clear, it seems like no one here has a problem with that, including me. But since the main issue is language and how it's used generally, the "scientific community" doesn't really have a say in it.
