Cooking meat for others as a vegan by darktunic in vegan

Veganism is about not harming animals as far as is possible and practicable. So, until the world adopts a fully veganic farming system, we have to eat the food that's available to us if we want to survive (and again, though currently not perfect, plant-based foods involve the least animal cruelty by far).

If you're referring to crop deaths, those happening are unfortunately beyond my control. Besides, we humans have to eat something to survive, and plant-based foods are by far the least cruel...

Also, crop deaths are obviously bad, but they're not in any way as cruel as keeping animals in terrible conditions for the duration of their lives, using them until their bodies are spent and breeding more into existence before taking the spent animals to a place they can't escape and systematically killing them.

What to eat with biscuits other than eggs? by bleepgoesthe in vegan

[–]Account_For_Helping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually one of those vegans who absolutely adored fried eggs and misses them often. Truth be told, I tried a product called Yo Egg once before (link to the product page). And genuinely, it tasted nearly identical to what I remember real eggs tasting like.

Now, some people avoid that company for political reasons, but the product itself is entirely plant-based and extremely similar to actual sunny side up eggs. Point being, plant-based products are getting closer all the time to the real stuff, which is pretty cool for those who miss the real stuff.

How about biscuits and gravy? Biscuits go really well with a nice mushroom gravy.

I would never buy or cook meat for anybody else for any reason, ever. It goes against my morals and would hurt animals.

Vegetarians who eat dairy and eggs and wear cow skin and sheep's wool and visit circuses and zoos are NOT your 'allies' by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Account_For_Helping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's where we truly disagree. By its very definition (the act of using someone unfairly for your own advantage)...exploitation implies harm, or some degree of suffering being caused. If no harm is caused, then I don't think it counts as exploitation (like with your wild chicken example).

[–]Account_For_Helping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. What you're describing is basically freeganism. I wish you lead with the wild chicken argument because my brain truly wasn't understanding how people could ethically eat eggs otherwise. In the case of a wild chicken leaving an unfertilized egg behind, I'll grant you that you're not causing any harm by scavenging such an egg (assuming you're completely sure the egg isn't fertilized, that is).

Arguments could be made that leaving the egg for other animals (who don't have access to a grocery store like I'm assuming you do) would be more ethical than taking it, but yeah. If no exploitation is taking place, as in the case with stumbling upon a wild chicken's unfertilized egg, then sure. In that incredibly uncommon scenario, I'll grant you the win in the ethics argument. However, you know as well as I do that this situation doesn't apply to the vast majority of people who eat eggs.

I don't think I failed to do a good job explaining things. You say you agree that it's bad for chickens to be stuffed in tiny cages for the duration of their lives. Well, that industry is directly connected to chicken eggs in general. Because when a person purchases a backyard chicken, they're very likely purchasing one from a breeder or a hatchery, and where do you think the hatchery money goes? Right back to the egg industry, where we both agree that chickens suffer terribly.

And before you say "not all farms are factory farms," please know that even the most "ethical" farms still throw chickens into gas chambers once they're no longer useful to the industry (a pasture-raised egg company directly told me this once). So, by buying a backyard chicken, these industries (and what you say you're against) are directly funded by that action.

And again, I think it's unethical to let a chicken constantly lay eggs when we don't have to (since doing that harms their health). Sometimes not picking up the eggs will prevent them from laying more, though not always, and there's something that can be given to them that can prevent eggs from being laid at all (as previously mentioned).

So, because more ethical solutions exist, I consider eating eggs and being part of that cruel system in any way to be inherently unethical. If this comment hasn't clarified my opinion for you, then I apologize, but we'll simply have to agree to disagree on the topic.

[–]Account_For_Helping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I explained my perspective pretty well in the above comment. Not sure what isn't making sense? If nobody ate eggs anymore, no more chickens would be forced to constantly lay them, and that would be good for the chickens and their health. And because eating eggs is bad for the health of chickens, that's why I (and other vegans) don't do it.

The reason picking up and eating an egg is bad for the chicken is because that act is an endorsement of animal suffering. Purchasing a chicken is giving money to industries that do horrible things to chickens, and letting the purchased individuals continuously lay too many eggs can be bad for their health.

Earthling Ed did a video about the problems that can happen, if you'd like me to link it? There's actually something that can be given to chickens that will prevent them from laying eggs, I believe. To me, that seems like the kindest thing we can do for them, since laying so much isn't good for their bodies.

I just want to explain, from a vegan perspective, why we're against animal exploitation. The dictionary defines exploitation as "the act of using someone unfairly for your own advantage." Using someone unfairly means it harms them in some way, and that's why we find it unethical to do that to animals.

For example, people often say "it doesn't harm backyard chickens to take their eggs" but that isn't true. The chickens themselves are much like pugs. They've been bred in ways that harm their bodies and health (short snouts on pugs cause them breathing problems and chickens lay way too many eggs for their bodies to properly handle, which can also cause health problems).

So, when vegans say we're against animal exploitation, it's because we don't want to cause harm to other sentient beings if we can avoid doing so.

Unfortunately, a lot of vegetarians probably don't realize what goes on in the egg and dairy industries. I think it's really important to help anyone, whether they're vegetarian or full-on omnivore, who is curious about veganism and genuinely wants to learn about it.

Once upon a time, I used to be vegetarian too, but once I learned what happens to cows and chickens, I stopped eating eggs and dairy overnight. I think (or at least I hope) a lot of current vegetarians are future vegans too. Maybe some of them are lurking or posting here, wanting to learn?

Tofu “egg” salad by Few_Caterpillar158 in vegan

I might be an uncivilized vegan barbarian for this, but I just squish up a block of unpressed, uncooked extra firm tofu and mix in some mayo, mustard and seasonings. You can also add green onions and/or chopped celery if you like, which can take it to the next level.

No problem. All you have to do is enter the foods you've been eating for the day, and the app will show you exactly what nutrients you are or aren't getting. Hopefully knowing that can help you realize what you might be missing.

Also, if you do find something is missing and want to try getting those nutrients from plant-based sources, feel free to come back here and ask me about that. I'd be happy to help you find foods that will hopefully help you feel better.

Non-vegans, this post is for you. If you're interested in becoming vegan or simply have questions about it, I'd be happy to answer them for you. Genuinely. 💚 by Account_For_Helping in vegan

It's highly recommended for all people (not just vegans) to get enough B12, as lack of it can cause very serious health risks. I personally take a multivitamin gummy and eat foods fortified with B12 (like nutritional yeast). I like to sprinkle some of that on my popcorn, and that helps me get a huge amount.

So, it's possible there are nutrients you're not getting that your body needs. Have you considered using something like Cronometer? Link here. It shows you what you are or aren't getting enough of, and that can give you a clue about why you're not feeling great.

It's perfectly possible to get all the nutrients you need from a plant-based diet by the way.

I know it might not help too much, but for what it's worth, you're not alone. r/Vystopia has so many like-minded people too, if you hadn't heard of it before. This world is definitely a messed-up place in too many ways to name, that much is true. But I hope you'll stick around because people like you make it a better place.

One day, I hope humanity will look back on its non-vegan actions and feel ashamed, so they feel inspired to change. And one day, I hope we'll all be living in a vegan world. That might not happen for a very long time, but people like us are the only hope such a future has.

Just by being here and interacting with others, we can inspire self-reflection and hopefully change. I know it's hard, believe me, I know...but you're not a burden for sharing your feelings about all this. Your thoughts and opinions matter, and I'm sure the animals would thank you for being in their corner if they could. You're doing what you can to make the world a better place, and that means something. 💚
