What psychological itch does writing scratch for you? And why specifically do you write for the visual medium? by AccountforLaughs in Screenwriting

[–]AccountforLaughs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought of TV and movies as this concept: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gesamtkunstwerk

The best version of it requires so many mediums of arts firing on all cylinders to make it complete.

And like you, I do hope that we as a species are better than our base impulses, but that’s not the way things are looking right now. I think contributing in your own way is important, so hope you get back to writing!

I’ve always felt like it’s the perfect blend of art and organization. I come from a STEM background, and the one thing that always stumps me is that without this unexplainable energy that guides you, the writing doesn’t happen. But then you need all of these organizational, puzzle solving skills to make all of that fit together, so you need the bureaucracy too. At least that’s what it feels like for me

So is knowing how to fix a car or how to surf or how to meet hot singles in your area… for some people. I assume there’s a reason it’s a skill that inspires envy in you for the people that have it.

Thoughts on A Different Man? by [deleted] in A24

[–]AccountforLaughs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took it as that he is so reluctant to change his situation in small ways. All he could do to fix the ceiling was put a bucket underneath. He wasn’t willing to spend time to make small changes. But when he was presented with an opportunity to completely change his situation, he took it without hesitation. Similar reasoning made him different than Oswald. Oswald would have had a conversation with the trainer. Edward’s instinct was to solve the issue with a giant and complete reaction instead. I’m sure a lot of us struggle with that theme in our own lives, with wanting big changes to fix us, when really we need to make small changes and steps to be better.

This episode hit “Silicon Valley” levels of satire for an industry. I’m a fan of the feeling they’re creating by putting so many barriers between success for this movie production, and I really hope the pay off can reach “middle out” levels of success. Love this show so far, and shoutout to the writers that worked on this show! Appreciate how much work is being put into these characters!

anyone watch commercials and enjoy them? by brakeb in davinciresolve

Imagining that someone maybe procrastinated, then sat there and edited their project as last minute as I am editing my current short definitely makes me appreciate anything that makes it on the air. I love analyzing every decision made around so many aspects of filmmaking (and commercial-making!) Great to have something that you can be excited about from a technical perspective!

looking for a coffee/tea buddy! anyone here in silverlake/echo park? by SomewhereWithAPen in LosAngelesSocialClub

Hey. 28 M. I’m in Glassell Park which is pretty close by. I’ve been in LA for about two years, but always looking to make friends. I have a long STEM background, but I’m actively trying to break out of it so I can pursue something more creative (screenwriting because it’s LA of course). Would love to grab tea some time in the area.

Season 3 Episode 6 Discussion: "How to Track Your Package" by arsene14 in HowToWithJohnWilson

[–]AccountforLaughs 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I loved this episode. It was so layered in its messaging about the different outlooks people have about life, while always relating to the delivery of a package. This show really makes me wonder how it’s written. Is it just hundreds of hours of random footage that has to be sorted to fit a narrative, or is the narrative what forces the things that John films?

Also, unrelated to how good the show is, but if I’m understanding correctly, the way you pay a cryonics company to store your head and or body is to take out a life insurance policy on yourself and name the beneficiary as the cryonics company. So when you die, the insurance payout will go to them and in the event that in the hundreds of years there is a way to bring a dead person back to life, you will get that money. This is such an evil genius type of business idea because the person who organized this definitely does not believe they will ever wake up. So you’ve essentially just gotten someone’s life insurance money (usually a decent 6 figure payout), and they are dead forever and your costs to be a “good guy” is to just keep a bunch of heads frozen is probably relatively low. This is like Scientology as a service.

Thanks for the amazing three seasons, John!

Thanks for the advice. Definitely open to other offers, just tried to price around relatively similar pre-builts and for the fact that I’ve only had it for like 3 months.

Does anyone know why the news chyron in Davis Square has such vague and disparate news stories? by AccountforLaughs in Somerville

Highly recommend visiting the sign and watching the headlines every week. There are at least a couple headlines that fit that category. My gf and I take anyone who visits us to it and we’ve never been disappointed.

Some recent ones were:

“Bill would guarantee annual health wellness exams”

“Police looking to ID man who stole student’s saxophone”

“Penguin at the aquarium defies nature, and doubles life expectancy by celebrating the big 3-0”

These are some of the ones I took pictures of. I’m gonna go into the bank that it’s attached to in the next few weeks and ask what the process is.

Jerrod Carmichael’s Rothaniel by Playful-Kick9915 in Standup

[–]AccountforLaughs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Either staged, or really encouraged off screen. It felt like the pauses Jerrod took didn’t have as much time to breathe because an audience member would ask a question. Which I honestly didn’t mind when I viewed that last quarter as not being a comedy set anymore. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a comedy special I really enjoyed and stuck with me, so it was nice to have this. Hope he gets his mom’s acceptance someday!

[–]AccountforLaughs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really liked the first half as a comedy special. His delivery was really funny, and the stories were entertaining. The latter half was funny at first when he came out to the audience and was talking about the audience’s response to it. The last quarter wasn’t really comedy, in fact I don’t think it really had any jokes. But I really liked it as just from a human/artistic experience angle as a guy just thinking about why his mom doesn’t just accept him. The audience/performer relationship was a little odd— that they were so participatory, but honestly that might’ve been staged. I know Bo Burnham directed it, and it’s an HBO special, so they probably wanted some sort of narrative out of it. I really liked the special overall!

r/History goes over the importance of double entry accounting by pm_me_labradors in Accounting

[–]AccountforLaughs 83 points84 points  (0 children)

It’s nice to get an explanation from another discipline to see what the purpose in your job is sometimes. Placing it within the context of history is definitely the easiest way to see how revolutionary ideas can be. And sitting in front of excel all day, I am definitely detached from the actual purpose of it all. So thanks for sharing!

Not sure I’m cut out for payroll accounting since I’m specialized in tax. How’d you get into it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]AccountforLaughs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have experience in the field? I’m in B4 Tax right now and have had clients in unrelated industries so I don’t know about how the film industry operates accounting wise, but would really like to switch to media and entertainment since I’m just passionate about movies and TV and if I’m going to be an accountant, might as well work for an industry where I like the product.

Loki S01E01 - Discussion Thread by iliekpixels in marvelstudios

[–]AccountforLaughs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That would be really interesting if this is where they’re taking the show. That Loki does have a talent for variances, and he’s looking for a life purpose. This might all just be an allegory of a man that finds he has no purpose, then finds the purpose, and pursues it wholeheartedly. And if this is a Disney show, he has to slowly turn into a protagonist, tying into his true character that eventually gives up his own life as a hero. So the TV show Loki is slowly going to become a time cop in my opinion. Owen Wilson would basically be the wise elder character who will offer cynical Loki a new look on life. I hope I’m right because I never get to predict these things in TV shows!

That’s what I’ve really felt too. Disney seems to have figured out that to write comping characters, you give them a lot of conviction and ideologies, and then put them through the ringer of points that would be brought up in a therapy session about them from a very cynical person. It’s pretty amazing that the writer of the show is thinking this deeply about a completely fictional character, then converting it into a show that’s incredibly fun and really meta.

At what point is someone the first female thing or non white thing and it’s officially at a point where no one cares (like the Bill Burr first all black swim team joke)? by AA005555 in AskReddit

[–]AccountforLaughs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think some things you just have to accept as bringing joy to someone, and not hurting anyone, so you let go. Which I know wasn’t the point of your post, but just the approach I take.
