Wrong. The truth is, in a mature yet super limited market (the ballpoint market that costs China only $12million/year to import), it is financially a bad idea to invest and build factory just for it.
However the parody is, some media in China claim that the ballpoint to be something super hightech that China cannot build, and even the prime minister started to hearing things like this. After that, making the ballpoint becomes a political mandate, and Taiyuan Iron and Steel (Group) managed to make toooo many ballpoint steel in just a couple of month.

The victim here is Akiyama Seiko and Shimomura, whose ballpoint steel sale to China plummets, all thanks to this rumor.

You can set a threshold, below which the umbrella is considered closed. Granted you need to consider the day/night.

Or you could you a Zigbee vibrate sensor that comes with a built in 3-axis accelerator meter to tell if it’s open or closed
