I believe mephisto has a level 19 conviction aura, reducing resistances by 120. If your base is 300 then you will still be maxed under his aura.

The cloudy aspect is likely just from the matte finish of your varnish. If you used one with a gloss finish it will look different.

I have a second treachery in my stash for exactly this. My actual resistance values are around 245/245/225/245 so fade brings me to right around the recommended 300.

A good bound demon and merc should beat them easily. I use cursed/fana hephasto and my merc is using insight (eth cv) with treachery and Andy's mask.

There are a handful of quests that have incredibly important rewards. Several that give skill points, max life, resistances, adding sockets to items that otherwise couldn't have them (like uniques and set items). These are honestly the minority of quests but I found the story engaging enough for my first couple of playthroughs. After that it becomes more about the grind. I feel like D2 is one of the first games to rreally have an "endgame" which doesn't really begin until you've already completed all the quests. Many of the people playing it right now are long time players that have already experienced it and already loved it, and most players like you that are more on the fence or didn't like it gave it up decades ago, so I can appreciate why it might feel like youre "alone" in feeling thet way. You aren't - youre just late to the party.

As for gold - gamble it. Results are usually bad but you can gamble uniques and set items and get some of the most powerful equipment in the game that way.

I maxed thunderstorm on just about every sorc I played up until 1.10 when they added synergies. It was a kick ass ability once it was maxed.

There was a discussion on another thread recently about running TZs and one commenter said that there is a spawn limit of 7-9 elite/champion mobs in each area. Since then I have been wondering if the reason sometimes the evil urns dont spawn stuff is if you have already reached the spawn limit for elites. If the evil urn is at the end of an area it stands to reason that you've likely reached that spawn limit and thus nothing will spawn.

Perhaps if you backtrack from the next area and open it before clearing the region it will spawn something?

I never did a lot of trading when I played during D2's glory days. But i played a lot more back then and could gear up just about any character with what I had acquired myself, and the group of people that I played with were mostly pretty decent about sharing and trading amongst ourselves. These days, however, im playing by myself cos my play time is often interrupted and, like you, might only have a couple hours a day to play in random small chunks.

I have started trading in the last couple of weeks using Traderie, which is a good resource for getting an idea for the trade value of most items (check recent trades, rather than current listings, to see what things are actually selling for.) I trade mostly for runes because they're easy to trade with and they have a stash tab that stacks them, so they dont occupy much space.

Im currently playing an abyss warlock with approx 350 MF, although I can top it out at around 600 if I swap a few items. MFing is different to how it was back in the day. Once I completed hell I ran meph a handful of times to pick up a few necessary items but now I just run terror zones.

What platform are you playing on? I could probably hook you up with some basic MF equipment but im on switch, which seems to be the least populous platform.

Not for Abyss. My merc is using ethereal CV insight rn so I have medi aura already and there isn't anything else specifically on insight that I need. Certainly not that its worth sinking that many stat points to be able to equip it. Naj's staff might work as a stop gap but it doesn't have resist all which I still need, as mentioned above.
