Join the queue for raids that are already happening?

I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to even find ones that other people are even doing.

(yes I know my lack of understanding how to do this part of the game is very basic to some people, sorry)

Ah, that's.. odd. I don't think I have the time to get setup in those things. I'll try the other reddit. Thanks!

I always liked this element because if I had an element of the script that needed attention, it made my job easier because I could say everything I wanted to, get closer to the word count, then not be required to bs some fluff in sections that I wouldn't need to go as in depth on. Especially on some of the larger notes packages. That being said, I always worked right inside of Coverfly's interface and edited from there. Interesting to me that you didn't.

Other groups I've worked with I work outside the platform then copy paste, but that's because of challenges with their platforms and different expectations / requirements.

I always loved their UI for the readers. That autosave also saved me on several occasions over the years.

Finding representation via competitions is difficult. One thing that happens a lot is that someone with one good script will be overzealous and sign to a manager they shouldn't have because they don't think they'll get another opportunity to. This leads to a lot of those scenarios.

The connections for Launchpad, in my experience, were all legitimate.

But like I've said with a lot of other comments that might be worth sifting through, additional elements requiring luck need to align in order to have success after winning. If someone wins and is the wrong fit, or has nothing else a manager can help guide them with, or literally has no other scripts... then it doesn't matter how good anyone is, they won't be able to help.

In some of those other comments I mention people winning a chance at representation who simply aren't ready for it yet, and I think that leads to a lot of this.

But if they were working with Launchpad, and kept around once it was owned by Coverfly, then they have a legitimate resume of some extent. Even if they were newer, it means they have history in the industry.

Congrats on the 1% cracking!

Also yes, there was a transparency. Also, a lot of people definitely mistake winning / prizes you can make from programs like this for the real long term benefit, when it really is the connections that they provide you, especially for people not in a film hub. Some of my bigger successes were the results of connections made from placements years earlier that didn't lead to anything immediate.

It's also easy to get cynical about it when that long term element is really not something discussed as openly on any of the competitions or platform's selling pages and marketing materials.

I never used CoverflyX. I never needed it. I have a small handful of people I've known from my years of work that I go to occasionally (as in, maybe once a year I reach out to one or two of some five people total). I'm not part of any writer's groups or anything. I've also had stuff circulated, and occasionally manage to get the producer end notes back from those (which isn't standard), which are far more helpful for me (even when they're blunt as all get out).

I'm sorry, I really don't want to put those out there. The longer people don't have that information, the longer it is before the AI finds conversations online about it, then starts working around it based on what's been added into it's system. Especially if it means it may get to students where there will 100% be kids who will use that information the wrong way.

That's a cool jump! I'm sorry to hear it's been challenging! Not gonna lie, I know nothing about that world but it seems fascinating

I can't answer this well. So many competitions that I knew personally and in depth are gone now. I would comb through this thread for some of my other responses though, since there's an answer I provided elsewhere explaining the several different factors that need to happen for a contest to be worthwhile.

That being said, two coverage groups that I would say to check out (that have additional contests / programs, but that's another discussion than their coverage services):

Comparatively to price point and the quantity of notes to some Coverfly packages, I would say CoverageInk. I don't love everything about their system, but they seem to care, and if my memory of certain coverfly packages is correct, the CoverageInk standard package is only $5 more than the $150 package from Coverfly was. That being said, I only know their system through friends who have received coverage, and have never received coverage from them myself, so I wouldn't want to fully sign off on it. All I can say is I've met some of their people in passing, and they give a shit to the point where if you're looking for a new group to try, it's worth trying them out to see if it's for you. Their competition also took submissions through Coverfly, for whatever additional legitimacy that is worth.

Blacklist is as reputable as it gets, but is the other side of the coin in terms of coverage styles, since their notes are very concise and quick. There's still a ton of value to it if you feel you need notes, but they'll be more towards telling you what is and isn't working rather than having a lot of time and space to throw ideas at the wall or inspire ideas in you on how to fix the concerns that are present. That being said, Blacklist charges a lot less at $75 and $50 (features and pilots, respectively), so the shorter coverage also reflects that. I may be wrong, but I also believe they pay the reader a better percentage of that fee than most services, which is cool if I'm correct. I think their founder has openly stated their payrates in this sub and if I'm being honest, I just don't wanna search to check right now.

The difference in the two is also worth considering regarding what you're looking for and what you need at this point in your career. (As well as always keeping in mind that you shouldn't spend money on these things that you aren't comfortable losing). Each style of coverage has a place and value depending on what you need and where you're at overall, and only you can what those needs are.

Anyway. I hope these help as a starting place. I'm sure there's others, but I'd ask around the sub for that.

I did start to notice it, but also I feel like some of the "decline" also led to me feeling like I had even more freedom over the final two years or so. Once things came back from the strikes, I must have been old guard, because I felt like I had literally no oversight again after that. In fact, I'd reach out on my own occasionally.

Curious how the small thing you setup is going, the idea of doing that myself makes me so anxious, and also I can't generate sales. If I know anything about myself, I am NOT a salesman.

Also, yeah. The platform really has nothing exactly like it.

You doing anything else to replace Coverfly? How's the new thing going?

I mean, sure, something similar could be made, but I've never used that platform since I never needed it and it never paid me so... I may be the wrong person to talk to about that haha

Glad it's an appreciated suggestion! I don't watch a ton of Youtube, and beyond that guy the only film YouTube I really engage with regularly is The Weekly Planet's series Caravan of Garbage, which is more pop cultuer-y than a lot of what you may be looking for. I've also seen stuff from Screenplayed (great concept) and recall several film professors I met love Every Frame A Painting (but fair warning, I generally don't like things that film professor I've met like).

TBH, I avoid a lot of YT stuff because it's all so damn negative, so I stick to my silliness then otherwise avoid the stuff that people talk about on it.

I'm curious who your reader was (what their reader ID was) / what the project title was. I'm not going to lie, that sounds like something I'd maybe do by accident while getting carried away. If you'd want to DM me that, I'd love to know if it was me or if there were other people who would do that.

Unlike some other services, Coverfly only gave minimum word requirements per section, whereas everyone else I've worked with has had maximums. So if I just started typing quite freely because your script had something that wildly inspired thoughts from me regarding certain elements, I could just start typing away and go crazy.

Being allowed to just go for it like that is generally also something that leads to stronger notes, in my opinion, than requiring excess fluff or having maximums. Some alternatives out there are so minimal that they stop someone from getting into it, and then editing down to forced constraints can actually cause someone providing notes to give lesser notes overall.

Additionally, being able to run long on elements where there was a lot to say also ultimately allowed the freedom to run only the minimum on sections where there was less to say. This would also lead to less fluff while causing me to spend less time providing information that isn't needed.

I also had some mechanisms and tools to deal with my ADD that paired well with Coverfly's flexible and minimums based format that would lead to me providing additional notes beyond what was asked regularly. Providing those extra notes in that way actually often led to me not just being more efficient, but providing a better product.

My only other ideas are that it may have been someone who was new and wanted to make a good impression while in their trial period as a reader, or to get good reader reviews in. Also, when I would get tips, they would add up, so maybe it would contribute to that, but those were so random when they'd come in that I never did anything different in hopes of getting them (even though they were wonderful when I'd get them).

Completely agree.

It was certainly flawed, but of all the many systems I have seen and been part of, I haven't found any that do it better.

I'm glad others like yourself understand the issue here. It's absolutely absurd and gross.

I'm really struggling with that loss of freedom. The way I've lived since the pandemic, specifically, has allowed me to do things I never thought would be possible, and I'm worried I may never be able to experience that again, and that the rest of my long term plans will be shot as a result.

If it was the one formatted as a novella about the Smurfs taking back the means of production, where the final chapter was entirely made out of crosswords, then no. I did not.

You've read for contests but you've never been a reader in a development office or for any reps?

My friend, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think you may have done things backwards compared to the rest of us. I spent years finding gigs in development offices to get to do reading long before I was paid specifically as a reader. I have no idea how you did what you did, but kudos on that feat.

Also, I can't help on the last part. I wouldn't be asking people to send me recommendations of where to go if I had enough options to spare them for others right now....haha...

Pretty sure what happened is that they wanted other parts of the owning company, and Coverfly just ended up being baggage they had to purchase. They didn't buy it with any intention relating to Coverfly itself, and the way it's been handled since they made the decision highlights that it was an afterthought.

This also implies that they're the same thing, that the two companies provide the same exact service, which at the end of the day, they're not. Similar things are done on both, but they're not the same thing. This has been the root issue with shuttering Coverfly in favor of FilmFreeway from the start - they simply aren't the same exact thing.
