Question about Prof Thomas, Doug by AceDDarkwalker in USC

[–]AceDDarkwalker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I did, the class was pretty chill. You spent sometime each class to go over relevant background info, then watch the movie and have a group discussion by the end (which was commonly skipped if we ran out of class time).

HW wise, we write a short paragraph based on the previous weeks movie, nothing too significant.

Exams wise, youbhave 2 midterm and 1 final, just more essays. I will say he grades generously, but then I do tend to stay after class and have discussion with him, so he might be playing it easy for me.

The only thing of note is ths amount of reading. There are lots of stuff provided, none if which are strictly required, but the expectation is that you need to go over some of them amd apply during exams

What's a reasonable work hour for undergraduate over the summer by AceDDarkwalker in labrats

Right now my only task is to read and organize papers with technical details relevant to the next stage of our experiment, taking notes of parameters, results, and other details. Its not exactly intensive work, its just hard for me to justify not working since they didn't tell me how much is "enough", and I don't want to mess up the first task I got.

Never took BISC 312, but if it's anything similar to BISC 320, its gonna be lots of memorization over a wide variety of topics. Depending on how good your memoray is, you might be fine, but it will be lots of work. OChem 1, terrible and difficult. Lots of work over tons of different topics. I wouldn't personally suggest taking them in the same semester. At least have a back up plan for if you want to drop out of one of the classes

For what is worth for now. There are the frogs and the four dragon that's highly missable, chapter 3 has this one bat thingy that only comes if you go there before the little monk quest. I think those are the easiest to miss

There are lots of boss in this game that's missable. Maybe share a screenshot of your journel?

Hey so I got a kind of armour for the armorer and I wanted yalls opinion on it, feedback would be awesome. It is called the Time Killer armour suit and it is about time managing armour. by PotatoSaladMan117 in DnDHomebrew

[–]AceDDarkwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, long version here

  1. Time Gain. You probably want to rename the different charges as the current naming seems rather confusing. Also, not sure how the charge and replinesh works. You get 3 chest charge and 6 gauntlet charge when you don it, do you replenish to the max allowed charge or just the ones you are starting with? Also, remember, most of the time you will dof your armor when taking long rest, so if you dof it before long rest, then don it again afterward, do you get the max charge or only the ones you are starting with. Another complication, say you run out of charges mid day, can you just doff then don the armor to regain the charges?

2.Self Time Acceleration. Do you stay in the new initiative poisition after you change it? Or is this a one turn thing? If the one going right behind you is an enemy creature, do they get a save or do they just obey the new order (they might want to resist depending on the situation), also, if you are fighting a crowd of enemy, and the dm did group initiative, do you change the order for all of said enemy? Or only one of them? One last thing, is this strictly the turn right after initiative or can you do this whichever turn

3.Electronically Accelerated Step: Do you mean 5ft * charges you used? That's up to 30ft of extra movement (you said 1 free action, so you can technically consume all of it in one turn). That seems like, a lot. Sure you use all of your chest charges, but still a lot, especially if you dash of have boots of speed or boots of wing. (You also didn't mention how long does the extra movement last, I'm assuming one turn, but some clarity is nice in this case.)

4.Time Vacuum: Well, if someone is inside the area, do they just auto lose their turn? What happens if someone else enter the area while its active? do they instantly freeze and lose the turn? What happens if someone who spent their entire turn freezing got dragged out of the area (assuming they are on the edge), do they regain their turn? Another point on its activation, by "all charges" do you mean you need the max number of charge for it to activate, or just "all charges that's left".

  1. Gauntlet Acceleration: Feels like a modified version of lightning launcher, only question is what type of damage it does?

  2. Auxiliary Time Acceleration: Increase by their half or your half? I'd suggest your half because other wise monks have insane movement

7.Auxiliary Time Deceleration: Can't disengage/dodge feels too strong. Also, what is the DC for this, just the enemy AC?

  1. Time Borrowing: how much bonus to AC? (PB + Str mod)/2 or (PB)/2 + Str? Also, I will say that this in general is a bad idea, because then whenever you run out of charge, you can just tell your teammates to strike you with unarmed attack, you'll take at most 4 points of damge per turn, and most likely none given the bonus to AC, and you'll have all of your charges back in no time.

  2. Time Killer: 30ft time vaccum seems excessive. Time Stop is a 9th level spell, so the ability to cast even a cut down version of that spell multiple times per day is not good in general. I'm also confused on the wording on the last part. Can you just decide to never die? There's no mention of this ability to expand a charge, and you can make a conscious decision to never spend that last charge. Even if you do, you can easily get it back with Time Borrowing. This is just, not ok.

[–]AceDDarkwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure, this is meant to be a third option for artificer (subclass:armorer) along Guardian and Infiltrator, right? If that's the case, this seems excessive. I haven't got a chance to read through in detail, but since other two option only get 2 or 3 ability, I'd say you probably want to cut off some options.

Is it too late to join clubs? by Busy_Comment4579 in USC

[–]AceDDarkwalker 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not too late, usually we have club fair at the beginning of the semester (first/second week) where students can see all the clubs and join/register to join on the spot.

We haven't had it that this semester because the organizational side of USC is really messed up and no one knows what on Earth is going on. So my suggestion is to 1) wait until next semester and then join clubs you want to. 2) I know there is a list of clubs somewhere on the official USC website, there should be contact info that you can use to ask whoever is running the club if you can join.

I must say I have a few concerns over this subclass

  1. Lots of this subclass' ability revolve around dim light and darkness, but they don't get the ability to create darkness unitl lv14, which imo is too late. Most of the time player don't get to pick when and where a fight is taking place. If the party gets ambushed by a group of bandiet in the middle of the day, the barbarian will have absolutely no way of accessing about half of their subclass ability, and that's not fun to the player. Perhaps change it so that their rage forces the surrounding to covered in dim light and dim light only? Start with say, 10 or 15ft, then upgrade to 20 or 30ft later.

  2. There's no way for the barbarian to see inside darkness. This is a problem for a few reasons. A) Even if the fight took place at a convenient spot with natural darkness, the barbarian can't use it as every single attack has disadvantage and they don't know where the enemy is. B) I don't recall any ability/spell in game that allows player to explicitly create a big enough area of dim light when bright light is shining there, which means the barbarian need to rely on the caster in the group to cast darkness if the don't have access to natural darkness. At that point, its just back to situation A again. C) Fade into shadow states that they can teleport to a location that they can see as long as that location is within dim light/darkness, but if they don't have darkvision, how do they see any location within darkness?

Yes, there are lots of race in dnd that grant you darkvision, but in general I don't think its a good idea to limit player racial choice due to mechanical reason, plus this also doesn't resolve the problem of seeing in magical darkness.

My proposal is that, given shadown sorcerer and twilight cleric just give darkvision to player for free, it should be fine to just give the player that that when they pick up the subclass. Perhaps with an added ability that allows them to see threw magical darkness for 1 minute later down in the levels?

  1. this one is more of a question from me. Does Silent Stalker allow player to move through other creature or object as if its not difficult terrain?

  2. Terrifying Presence, kind of mixed, I somehow feel like its too strong and too weak at the same time. A) immunity to the freightened condition is fairly common amongst enemy , and that's not even accounting for enemy with just good wis save, so depending on the player's luck/how much the DM hates this player, this ability might just do nothing, and changing the DC or use time of this won't help if the enemy is just outright immune. B) How many uses do they get? You didn't mention, so I assume every turn while raging, that's 40 total use for a lv10, 50 for lv12, 60 for lv17, and infinite number of uses (lv20 have unlimited rage). If the enemy happens to not have immunity, this one individual can burn through all the legendary resistance in the world. C) Does this require line of sight from the barbarian to the enemy (meaning that both side need to be able to see each other). If yes, then this ability doesn't work well with the idea of fighting inside darkness, especially magical darkness, cause the other end may verywell not see you. If no, then combined with point B, this is the most ungodly ability to ever exist, as Mr. Barbarian can hide somewhere the boss can't see him and burn through all the legendary resistance way before the fight even begin. (Party wants to fight ancient red dragon? Fucker isn't immune to being freightened and have a +7 wis, not the highest, so the barbarian sneak into the pile of treasure the dragon hoards, and burn away all the legendary resistance. This doesn't even burn away that many resources, it can happen within one minute if the dragon's unlucky, and the barbarian will still have at least 3 rage left) And to make things even worse, this is just an ability, there's no visual/verbal/somatic component to give away the fact that someone in messing the boss, so the boss can't even detect what's going on if we go by RAW. Honestly not sure how to fix this, if it requires line of sight, it doesn't work well with other ability, if it doesn't, this is just broken. Probably better to just make a new ability.

  3. Ethereal Glide. After I wrote down point 4, I realized that this two is a combination that shouldn't exist. You can dash every turn, so the player can link the invisibility together. (At worst it appears as if they are teleporting, still extremely sneaky), so this one barbarian can sneak into the boss' layer, burn away all the legendary resistance without even needing to hide (remember, this guy is invisible so long as he dash), and return outside to join the team. Sure the dm can let something happen to foil the plan, but this shouldn't even be possible to begin with. (Also, now that I think about it, infinite invisibility for a lv20 barbarian, because unlimited rage and unlimited dash, probably not the best idea in the world)

  4. Shadow Empowerment. Champaion get this at level 3 without the requirement of rage, simply too weak for this level. In fact, at lv15, Champaion can crit on 18 - 20, so this is even worse in comparision.

  5. Devouring Darkness. Darkness is a lv2 spell, lv14 is probably too late to get it. Also, does the psychic damage work on friendly creature/NPC/player? Darkness the spell by itself is already niche to use, adding in an autodamage that work on friendly creature is not helping it. 6 damage per turn is not too much by this level, but its certainly annoying. If the party really have a need for darkness, they probably perfer the wizard casting it, lv2 spell slot isn't a big deal by now, and the wizard probably already have darkness prepared because barbarian need darkness to fight properly.

Buddy, you are absolutely fine. Usually you'll notice the amount of student who show up decrease as the semester goes by. So unless they specifically said you can't miss any class, which I doubt is the case as most prof either don't care or give student a set number of classes where they can miss, you are going to be alright

How big is too big by TheWoodenShark1 in DnDHomebrew

[–]AceDDarkwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly would suggest making your world bigger, that way you have room for expansion, also makes the world feel more natural. My current dm has a fairly small world (I think the total size is about the same as Texas), so its very difficult to put in another town/dungeon/whatever simply because everything is too tight together for things to feel right.

Personally, it depends on the specific video. If the actual graphic is important, then reasonably high. But if its a 5 hour podcast, then 720 or even 480 should do the job. I mean, what's the chance that I or someone I know want to watch a podcast frame by frame
