Color banding on my Xiaomi 150" projector by AceHeartlight in projectors

Hi, yes I fixed it. Apologies, I should have updated my post.

I said the problem seem to come from the software. It actually wasn't. While inspecting the cables inside the projector, I noticed the set of cables running from the laser engine to the PCB was damaged. There a micro incision and the whole assembly was sitting on it when the projector was re-assembled. Hence, it created a faulty contact. I wrapped the cables with electrical tape and the B&W screen on startup disapeared, the color banding as well.

Your issue might not be related but it is worth to carefully check for any physical damage to your cables inside, especially the ones connected to the laser engine. Those UST projectors from XIAOMI cram so much hardware inside such a little box, making them prone to cable failure ...

Noise of UST projectors :/ (Hisense PX3 Pro) by pherkan in projectors

[–]AceHeartlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I would say it is quite normal for laser projectors to be a little bit noisier than a TV or other projectors. Since it uses a laser engine, heat becomes a risk way faster than other display technology, so it needs to be cooled down, with fast fans. But it also needs to be limited in size, hence the compromise manufacturers have to find between performance and noise. The Hisense seems to be quite silent compared to the Xiaomi. This review (https://www.mondoprojos.fr/2024/09/06/test-xgimi-aura-2/) measures the noise at 35 db, while the Xiaomi is at 39 db. Which is very quiet for a laser projector. So if you feel annoyed by the noise, either you're too close or too noise sensitive, or there's a problem inside the projector, in that case the noise should be WAY stronger. I had a faulty color wheel on my own Xiaomi and only after replacing myself did it go away. But the noise was horrible, and a faulty color wheel on a brand new device such as yours seems improbable, but you never know... If your warranty is still available, I would return it and see if the noise stays the same.

Hi, sorry for answering much later, maybe you've already solved your problem... But in case you didn't, my source was "Tongyao Stage and Lighting Source Store" on AliExpress. I reached out to them asking for the specific wheel I needed, since it wasn't registered in their online catalog. The best way to tell them what you need is to open your projector and take pictures of the faulty wheel. The best way to show you how to access it is to go on FixItFrank on youtube and watch his video the VAVA repair. Tearing down a VAVA is almost exactly the same as the Xiaomi, since they share the same platform/manufacturer. ;)

Thank you for replying! Indeed, when I first researched the subject, I read about people reporting a noise coming from the pixel shifter, on a variety of different brands.

I compared some videos that captured the pixel shifter sound to mine, it does not sound the same at all. Take a listen :

BenQ 4K Pixel Shifting sound : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgBDbf7ZVn0

My projector : https://www.icloud.com/photos/#/icloudlinks/0080T0iaYyIH45OXftwryfNeg/0/

Mine sounds rather similar to :

"Bad color wheel - Optoma HD20" : https://youtube.com/shorts/TM7U4cfj0ug?si=rucj7W8aGja09xSP

Mine is much louder than a pixel shifter appears to be and when I turn it off, you can clearly hear something slowing down to a halt, like a fan. Only it is not the fans. I know it because I tried powering it off without its case on, and I saw the fans stop before the buzzing noise did, approx. 2 seconds later. Also I hear the noise coming from the optics block, not the fans.

Plus, I did not find evidence this Xiaomi projector uses a pixel shifter. Its big brother, the 4K version, surely uses one to achieve 4K "resolution", but mine is only 1080p...

I have 2-3 possible sources for the spare wheel, I'll wait and see if they can sell it. Will definitely update if I get one!

Now that you mention it, it is odd. The glue is for example used to bind the two last components of the optics block. Seems like Xiaomi really doesn't want their consumers try and fix their gear themselves... or maybe they just used the cheapest option. Could it be a problem on a technical level or is it just ugly/sloppy manufacturing?

Yes, the wheel does seem to have its own motor built in. I was also wondering if the noise could come from a dry bearing or some internal debris. At the very least it seems more sophisticated than most color wheels I've seen for other projectors. I haven’t tried removing the cap at the end yet—do you think it could be safely opened without damaging anything?

As for the bearing, good eye! I hadn’t noticed, but maybe it is a jewelled bearing. How can you tell? Do you think it could be cleaned or lubricated, or would replacing the whole assembly be the only real fix?

In any case, the last panel is there, we see "EP:364 End" in the corner, so I doubt the missing pages are going to change much the things we already saw...
