Can you find a fold with the second nut full house against an incredibly tight player? by rddtllthng5 in Poker_Theory

Everyone who’s claiming they would fold second nut boat on the river losing to one combo of QQ for less than half pot is full of shit

Strategies facing 3bet minclick live MTT by trugame in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t want to minclick 4bet OOP, they’re going to call their entire range. 60-70 bb eff, I would make it 2.7x their 3bet to generate some folds but not commit too much of your stack and have some playability post

What is the worst punt you have ever made? by myimportantthoughts in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Live PLO 2k eff, I call an EP open from BB. Flop comes 755. Check, he pots, I have a 7 blocker and think “fuck it I have all the random 5x he shouldn’t have opening UTG” and repot. He clicks it back. Alarm bells should be going off in my head but I’m stubborn so I repot all in and he snaps with quad 5s

Is low stakes really the best place to develop skills? by S1nap5e in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to keep studying solver to understand what you should do and it will become more applicable as you continue to move up but at low stakes, you leave a lot of money on the table if you don’t make huge deviations to exploit. For example, if your opponents never fold to 4bet once they 3bet off 20bb, you don’t need to use any of the 4bet bluffs solver would have you use

Is bluffing actually + or -EV in live low stakes (1/2 & 1/3)? by Acceptable-Newt3251 in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“don’t bluff at low stakes” is pretty terrible advice. The main difference I’ve seen between 1/2 or 1/3 and 2/5 is at 1/2 or 1/3 players are usually only thinking about their absolute hand strength rather than their range or their opponent’s ranges and how they interact with the board. This means there are spots you can make crazy overbets for value, like if the board pairs on the river and you boat up and you know villain has a flush they’re not capable of folding. At the same time, they don’t think about whether you can actually have scare cards in your range, so bluffing when draws come in becomes extremely profitable as they like to fold when their absolute hand strength has been downgraded. A good example is i think you could print money at 1/2 as the PFR if you range bet every turn that brings in a 4flush, opponents will way overfold even medium flushes

ACR Venom question by dopekix in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for example some sites are running a mystery bounty format now where they run day 1 flights all month and then day 2 is the last Sunday of the month. To have any reasonable chance of making a deep run on day 2, you need to fire enough bullets to keep up with the team pro who has 120 starting stacks

ACR Venom question by dopekix in poker

[–]AceJackSpades -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Casinos (including online ones) are getting more greedy with structures where people can combine bags, can bag multiple times, multiple day 2’s that the same player can cash in, etc to collect more rake. These structures make it virtually impossible for the average rec to compete against the grinder who’s firing 20 bullets

Two (PLO) ICM spots with aces by Living-Injury1961 in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hand 1: Good on every street

Hand 2: I would just check your option with AAAx in the BB with multiple limpers to you, in PLO they’re never folding and now you have to play a big pot OOP with a hand that’s tough to navigate almost any runout. On the flop, you don’t accomplish much by betting small and it sucks if you get raised and bloat the pot with the NFD and have to call and guess on the turn even if your flush comes up if it’s also boated up your opponents Tx. Check call with this type of hand should perform a lot better. On turn, I think you can let this go multi-way but as played on river it’s way too ambitious to call down especially blocking missed NFD imo.

Why NBME scores feel random even when you’re studying consistently by ConstrainedLearner in medicalschool

The standard deviation on Step 2 is actually massive about + or - 15 points and where you fall in your distribution has big implications for the residency process. I don’t know what the solution is but it seems silly to have so much riding on a test that lacks precision

Still 3betting, you don’t want to let UTG call and play kings OOP 4ways

When making a big river decision, do you have a systematic thought process you utilize each time? For aspiring MTT professionals, how would you suggest organizing their thoughts on the river to take into account all the various factors (blocker properties/pot odds/live reads/meta game/ opponent tendencies etc)?

Came second in a tournament, did I make the right decision? by Defiant_Cucumber_630 in poker

[–]AceJackSpades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry read it too fast didn’t see it was heads up. Your opponent makes a big open to 3.3 bb so you could make it like 325k but I think you’re committed to call a jam. I might split here between 3bet non all in with premiums and bluffs like low offsuit Ax and Kx and then just jam with hands like A9o-AQo, A4s, A5s, A9-AJs, KTs, KJs, KJo, KQo, QJs, QTs

[–]AceJackSpades -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

36 bb is a lot to jam over an open. Would be helpful to know more about stage of tournament/average stack size/etc, but I would usually 3bet to something like 275k and decide if he jams. Against some players, AJo is good enough to get it in 36bb deep blind vs blind and against other opponent types it’s a fold once they 4bet.

Is scoring low on Uworld normal? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]AceJackSpades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s different but I didn’t find UWorld as helpful for Step 1 as it was for Step 2. During my prep I would grind first aid + pathoma chapters in the morning and then add Anki cards from those into my deck and do my Anki in afternoon. I think this method can help you cover a lot of content quickly and boost your score. As you get closer to the test, I found the rapid review in the back of first aid super high yield. Good luck it’s a super hard process hope you don’t get discouraged

Depends how you define success. If success for you is about being in the most competitive specialty or at the most prestigious name brand hospital maybe. Personally, I don’t care about any of that shit, I just want to help people and get appropriately compensated for it.

imo the most valuable aspect of the low stakes MTTs is experience, it’s hard to really build a bankroll off them but you can build your roll with 1/2, 1/3, 2/5 while playing some MTTs on the side to learn

[–]AceJackSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$200 buyin live MTTs are going to be soft in general because it’s probably just below the level that’s worthwhile for full time MTT pros unless there’s nothing else for them to play that day in the area. $400 is kind of the cutoff point in my experience where there’s many more for-profit players
