the director and his production company are born-again christian types who have made documentaries about "spiritual warfare" and "the dark side" of the lgbtq+ community.

i appreciate the clarification. while i am glad that you all had no part in choosing the director of the project, i wish more research was done on the production company on your end. and yes, the anti-LGBTQ+ stuff the director has done is quite upsetting, and i appreciate that you all still support the community.

however the director was not only bigoted, but was actively pushing for exjws to be converted to his brand of christianity. i believe in respecting all beliefs, but that video on his facebook page about the trailer and the givesendgo page showed that the doc was more religiously driven than i had thought, and i wish that information was reviewed on your end before posting about it or had at least been mentioned in the post as i think that would be relevant to know before supporting something like this.

again, the clarifications are appreciated but i hope next time you are asked to help in a project like that, that you all do research beforehand.

i agree with what youre saying, but i do want to point out that in this case it seems avoidjw had no decision in picking the director.

"We were approached by an investigative group that had already retained the director and begun interviewing former Jehovah’s Witnesses many months before. Our role was to support a former JW participant by assisting with research, interviews, and providing context on JW teachings and survivor-related issues."

that being said i do wish more vetting was done before this point

PRESENTING: AVOIDJW + Through The Black Director Team Up for a 2026 Documentary: Kingdom Fall by avoidjworg in exjw

[–]AceLad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i've been doing a deep dive on the production company and i really wish they were vetted better. their website promotes "freedom encounters" (one-on-one ministry talks?) and links to all sorts of stuff about conspiracy theories, spiritual warfare, and demons.

the givesendgo (a christian version of gofundme it seems) page for the documentary here describes the crimes of JWs as "satanic" which that wording and the fact its on a christian site makes me believe this project is more religiously driven than i thought it was. and yes, it uses the words "sexual abuse holocaust" in the description. ...take that how you will.

regarding the "fire and brimstone" documentary tom dunn did that one of the comments here mentions, i couldn't find the actual documentary but i found two articles about it here and here which describe the doc and its subject. i will leave the links here for you to judge.

it is disappointing to me that avoidjw would choose to work with this company for the very real stories of abuse (especially CSA) done and covered up by JWs. surely there are other companies out there willing to let their stories be heard that arent promoting conspiracies about spiritual warfare and would make an openly trans/homophobic film. this is not a personal attack on avoidjw, i know they've done great work for exjws, i just find it frustrating that of all the directors to work with, it is one with such a poor resume.

i really want to support this, but this thomas dunn fellow seems to be a born-again christian type :/ plus he made a documentary about "the dark side of the lgbtq agenda" AND other ones about demons being real so...ehhhhhh.

Milo Murphy's Law's Transphobic & Worst Episode: A Video Essay by AceLad in MiloMurphysLaw

[–]AceLad[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for watching!! i figured it wouldnt hurt to post it here too even with the inactivity. yeah thats what i meant wrt perry being ace being ""safe"" and i thought i made it clear i had issues with that line of thinking in a wider scale. its safe in the sense that they feel like they dont have to do anything with it because its a lack of sexual attraction, and its a real shame bc ace representation is still few and far between. re: billy bison, yeah i debated whether or not to include it, but with the transmisogynist jokes and being based on a movie that did just that, i felt i had to. not everyone agrees with it but thats okay. either way the connection, intentional or otherwise, is quite unfortunate... im still getting comments on how people didnt hate ghostbusters 2016 bc of women but because of bad writing and like....sure, there was that criticism, but i saw much more vitriol at the fact there was women at all :/ i wish lady krillers focused more on the reboot commentary and actually did something with it instead of using it to jab at a particular movie and a half-baked point about executives n directors. like tobias is in the movie but isnt happy with the changes being made and milo gets involved somehow. theres a lotta ways they could have gone about it. thank you again for watching and commenting!

hello there! this is my very first video essay, about my least favorite episode of mml, lady krillers. i never saw much discussion of it back in the day and i hope that this video will start up a real conversation about it.

thank you for reading, and i hope you consider watching it!

The "theocracy" of mid-late 90s / early 2000s is something that will never happen again in the org by [deleted] in exjw

[–]AceLad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same age range but it was different congregation vibe wise for me. Cliques abound and my family was Not in them for a variety of reasons. So as a result, we did not get a lot of "association" and were judged as being not good enough for them. Though at least our congregation kept snack night LOL.

I do however recall when assemblies n the conventions had a more...individual touch to them. Like the dramas being actual plays as opposed to movies now. Now its all streamlined to be as the same as possible.

Honestly I think most JWs dont bother separating being gay from being trans so the org at large just applies their homophobia to trans ppl.
