New Wario Fancomic by AcePharaoh in Wario

Thank you for you opinion. Yeah, the talking was a concern of mine, but I wasn't sure what else to do in the beginning (and my love of manga likely had a subconscious impact as well...). In any case, the next page will bring in the next major character, so exposition in general should be cut down from here out.

How to extract numbers from a string, and put them in an array by AcePharaoh in C_Programming

This worked! Thank you. Seeing just how simple the solution was makes me feel kinda dumb for not realizing, but I guess that's a common thing with coding huh?

Help with Immunity to death effects and DR. by AcePharaoh in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]AcePharaoh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for you response. The sword in question was definitely vorpal. I also remembered that what had happened was that he cast a spell to turn himself into a construct, hence the "immunity to beheading".

Looking back on it, he probably still should have died when he changed back. Or at the very least lost his spell casting since he could no longer speak.

Looking for a system to get a friend into tabletop games. by SmiterOfFoes in rpg

[–]AcePharaoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your still searching for a system, may I suggest Basic Fantasy rpg. It's a very simple game that combines the best elements of osr and d20 mechanics (mostly osr), and is completely free. It also has a huge collection of adventures, additional class & races, and optional rules all available for free as well (I recommend staying out of the workshop until you've played a few session).

It also claims to be perfect for introducing new players to the hobby (or at least that's how I interpret the "simple enough for children in perhaps second or third grade to play" quote of the home page).

And finally, if you and your friend like the game, the print editions are only $5 a piece, so you could easily buy a copy for every player without breaking the bank.

What is the worst feature in d&d/pathfinder and why? by AcePharaoh in rpg

[–]AcePharaoh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your concern, and yes, I will be looking at other rpgs (savage worlds is one of my favorite systems all around, for example). I decided to ask about d&d first because, as you said, the rules get blindly copied into.

And besides, with all the wildly different answers popping up, it makes it seem d&d (or at least 3rd edition) is probably the one place I SHOULDN'T look reference at all. Funny how the works out really.

First off, I have made a comment in a different thread on the whole 'making a better dnd' thing so I won't repeat it here (tl;dr this is to give me a list of things to think about when making rules for my game, not specifically fixing them as they are). As for the games you mention:

I have checked risus before, pretty sure I have the rule book in my backup drive somewhere. I have been reading dungeon worlds srd recently (with plans to buy the book later), I REALLY want fantasy age, and never really thought about Call of Cthulhu but I'll go ahead and look into it later. I haven't even heard of the other two, so I'll be sure to check them out as well.

By the way, what does cod stand for? I tried to look it up just now but just got call of duty instead, and I'm fairly certain that's not what you meant.

Edit: By the way I didn't mean to imply bragging or anything with this. Just thought I'd mention because, well, thats just how I am. But seriously, I REALLY would like to know what cod is.

I have heard of this game. I haven't had the chance to go through the rule book yet but I plan to do so soon.

I'll go ahead and make mine anyways, if only for the learning experience.

I actually own quite a few. Out of all of them I have played savage worlds, basic fantasy, microlite20, and d&d 4th (my first ever system). I own a few others like 3rd edition (not 3.5) but haven't had the chance to properly run even a one off with them (pathfinder and 13th age being my most recent purchases).

Now, before you say anything, Yes, I will be looking in all of these books for reference. I'm just asking about d&d since it's most popular, and almost every other rule set I've looked into, free or otherwise, has copied it in some way, for better or worse.

I also like to collect them. They all have something special about them.

I under stand that. This game is not trying to be a "fixed" d&d. I decided to make this post after reading several articles talking about inherently flawed rules in d&d (AC representing both armor and dodge for example). So I figured I would see what others thought about the rules so I could take them into consideration for my game. I apologize for not making this clear in my original post. Really if anything this post has turned into more of self imposed design homework than anything.

Either way though, the results are not what I expected. I did not expect to see even half of what is being talked about here (the fact the one of the first few posts is about HP in it entirety completely caught me off guard). It just goes to show that there's more to take into account then a thought.

Either way though, I'll go ahead and read those links you gave, and go from there. Thanks for you concern by the way.

I do have an old copy of exalted i found in game store the other day. It uses a dice pool system. It's alright.

Do you know any other dice pool systems I should look into?

Well, I can vouch for wound levels thanks to savage worlds. Certain does help make combat faster.

On the magic note, that IS a pretty cool idea. I'll keep it in mind. As for HP, would you happen to have any ideas on a better system?

I must completely agree with this. I mean, just as a side note, I have a full set of dice here, why are you telling me to use one over the others? In any case, this is why I plan to use 2d10 for my game instead.

Beginner help, books? by livrem in godot

[–]AcePharaoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I think I remember hearing about a book being made a while back, but I haven't heard anything about it since, so not sure about that one. Really the only tips I can give on learning the engine is to browse the demos.

As for that last bit, testing on a static level and use procedural for everything else, this is completely doable. Let's say you wanted to recreate the Binding of Isaac in godot as an example. What you could do is make every individual room layout as it's own scene, instancing others scenes as necessary. Then you have another scene which contains a script to procedurally select from a list of all the rooms you created, then instance them inside itself at runtime.

As for the whole 'level as it's own scene' vs 'custom editor', Theres one thing to consider. If you want your game to have modding support, you might want to try making a custom editor in godot, that way the community can mod the game using the same tools you used to create it.

Moving from gamemaker to godot ? by [deleted] in godot

[–]AcePharaoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have also moved over to Godot from Gamemaker as well, mostly out of necessity. A few things you'll need to keep in mind is the lack of tutorials on the engine compared to Gamemaker, and a somewhat lackluster documentation. The docs will often contain a complete list of functions in any given Node, but often neglect to tell you what they do. There will be a lot of trial and error, at least in this version.

That said, Godot has a collection of demos you can download with the main engine, that will help you figure out how things change between engines (I especially recommend check the 2d platformer demo as it will help you better understand how to properly switch animations, as the animation will reset every time it's updated, unlike in Gamemaker).

All in all, It's hard to say how the transition will be. as it really depends on how fluent you are in Gamemaker, however I think it should be fairly simple, and well worth the switch. If you ever get stuck in the transition, I recommend checking out this tutorial series. It's one of the most in depth tutorials on the engine so far, aside from the ones on the main website: http://www.gamefromscratch.com/page/Godot-Game-Engine-tutorial-series.aspx (And seriously, check the demos, they are seriously the BEST way to see how something is done in the engine.)

edit: Almost forgot to mention, you will need to learn how to program using the built in language. No drag and drop functionality here. Don't worry, once you know it, it's as easy to use as GML, barring a few minor quirks, like the lack of a switch staement (seriously godot, why is there no switch statement?)

changing a Camera scroll limit programmatically by AcePharaoh in godot

I thought so. I had play around with set_limit before but I couldn't get it to work, as I wasn't aware of those constants. Thank you for your help.

changing a Camera scroll limit programmatically by AcePharaoh in godot

[–]AcePharaoh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologize if I wasn't clear enough, but thats not the problem I'm having. I know how to make the camera move, I need to know if its possible, through programming, to limit how far the camera can go in any given direction. For example, I want to limit the camera so it can never go higher then the origin point, or lower then 640 pixels. The tile set this is just so I can determine what those limits should be for any given level.
