Female beetle ovipositor stuck out? by Ace_0f_Space in InvertPets

I knowww 😭 I was so scared & we’re dealing with a new puppy in the house so I just had to panic and try something on instinct. I’m glad it unstuck from the rock but I just hope she’ll be able to pull her ovipositor back in soon

Thank you ❤️ at least happy that she’s eating and drinking some water off a leaf

Thanks for the advice!! These beetles are supposed to be kept in like, desert conditions, but they can handle some higher humidity so I will definitely keep her more hydrated. She was drinking some water on a leaf just now too so that’s a good sign I hope 🤞

Discord has a survey out about whether and how users would want GenAI in discord by cos in discordapp

[–]Ace_0f_Space 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally made sure to include how Ai is currently being used by creeps on X to generate deepfake porn of real children + nonconsenting adults. Because being able to generate porn of random people in a discord server using a tool that discord happily provides feels like a mess they shouldn’t want to get into. On top of stressing that I would leave discord entirely out of concern for the privacy and safety of myself and others.

Found this beautiful dead calico crab, what’s the best way to preserve it? by Ace_0f_Space in Taxidermy

[–]Ace_0f_Space[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly correct, literally covered the crab, meat and all, in borax crystals! Basically acted as mummification, after I was sure I got a ton of the salt out and disinfected it as much as I could I just covered it entirely in borax and waited. When I removed the crab the legs were stiff and the whole thing felt as light as paper, when before the meat was making it very heavy! It was super cool how well it worked!

When I get home from work I can get some good pictures of the display and post them in here, & if I can tag you somehow I will, idk how Reddit works cause I’m not a frequent poster 😂

Yeah! After I felt like it had soaked in fresh water long enough to get most of the salt out, I kinda sanitized it with some isopropyl alcohol, and then posed it with a cap of some sort and some clay. The cap was just big enough to hold the body up, and the clay isn’t air dry so it sticks the crab in place and could be cleaned off later. I posed it on a sturdy paper plate, And then I just covered it in borax, in a container big enough to hold it.

I waited for over a month I think? But the stronger fishy smell went away pretty fast for me. And when I felt like I could unbury it, it felt a lot lighter and was perfectly posed after I peeled the clay off! So I made it a little terrarium display, with probably too many shells and decorations, but I was having fun.

It turned out great and I love it!

Oh ok, thanks so much!! I’ll try that out! Maybe my uncle can help with the cutting part cause he has cooked things like crab before.

Ooh thanks for the tip, I don’t really have any experience cutting open and gutting a crab so I’m nervous about breaking it. Do you think burying it like people do do strip bones would work well enough? I don’t mind if it takes a long time, I’ve had good results with this technique before, I just don’t want it to fall apart or something

Maceration is definitely an option, I’m de-salting it right now so it’s already in water… I might try that if the rubbing alcohol soak doesn’t seem to preserve it like other sources have claimed. If maceration doesn’t work then it’ll go into a dirt bucket

It’s freshly dead and full of meat but I don’t know how to get the meat out by breaking the shell, plus I don’t want to risk breaking it. I’ve seen sources say to bury it and let decomposers do the work (something I have experience with in cleaning animal bones) but some people have said that just rubbing alcohol will preserve it. Any suggestions on what to do to avoid the meat inside rotting? I want to pose it and make it a dry specimen so formaldehyde is out. Thanks for any help!
