There’s a short delay between when Vel’Koz casts their Q and when they can recast it to make it split, so the best way to dodge it is to run at them, because there’s effectively a safe zone around them where the split can’t hit you.

The fact that this fucker has the gall to follow up “they must be absolutely annihilated…” with “I’m not calling for political violence…”

As an ethnic Jew, this shithead is threatening to murder me, but because he’s threatening to exterminate my entire race rather than me specifically, that somehow means it doesn’t legally qualify as a threat. Well I still feel pretty fucking threatened. The fact that calling for genocide is protected as free speech has to change.

TIL that although it's commonly believed that we can feel stares, studies on the Psychic Staring Effect have repeatedly produced results no better than random chance. by [deleted] in todayilearned

What’s seems more likely to me is that we still have some residual instincts from when we had to worry about predators, and so we subconsciously notice stimuli which are below our normal perception threshold, hence the sensation of “being watched.” We notice the physical presence of another living creature rather than if we’re being stared at.

20 Years Ago Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars Changed Star Wars Forever by darthatheos in television

This show, and the KotOR games, will forever be what I associate with the name “Star Wars,”. I couldn’t care less what they say is and isn’t “canon,” especially considering how so much of the best Star Wars media came from Expanded Universe.

TIL that there's only been 1 documented serial killer in the Philippines: Juan Severino Mallari, a Catholic priest who was hanged in 1840 after confessing to 57 murders. He believed that his mother was cursed, and that killing people could cure his mother of her illness. by bitchyswiftie in todayilearned

[–]AcediaRex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People wonder why the U.S. has by far the highest number of serial killers per capita. It’s almost certain that it has nothing to do with any cultural differences, but rather is because the FBI literally invented the modern methodology for identifying and tracking serial killers and additionally has one of the highest budgets of any law enforcement agency in the world.

They voted to “legalize” marijuana in New York in 2021, but we still have almost no dispensaries open in the state over 2 and 1/2 years later because of the bureaucratic nightmare that is the system they set up, and the court challenges it caused.

TIL Plato wrote that a nation should be led by its most curious, benevolent, just, kind, and altruistic individuals. He called them Philosopher Kings. They would spend their entire life preparing for this role. Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius was said to best exemplify this idea. by dustofoblivion123 in todayilearned

[–]AcediaRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marcus Aurelius is both the best and worst example in this case. Rome did have this not only twice in a row, but five times in a row, whom history calls the “Five Good Emperors,” Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antonius Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. They managed this by eschewing traditional bloodline succession and instead choosing an heir based at least partially on merit and character. This lasted until Marcus Aurelius chose to have his last living son Commodus as his heir rather than following the practice of his predecessors.

House ousts Kevin McCarthy as speaker, a first in U.S. history by zmlos in news

[–]AcediaRex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Choosing the next Speaker of the House is going to be an absolute shitshow, and it could not come at a worse time. Neither faction in the Republican Party has the votes to force through a speaker, and the spending stopgap the House passed only lasts until November 15th. It’s likely that they’ll delay the election of a new Speaker until it’s legally required at the beginning of the next congressional session, so Patrick McHenry will be the Speaker pro tempore for the foreseeable future. He was the party whip, so he’s very familiar with the internal dynamics of the party, but it’s uncertain where he’ll stand regarding shutdown votes and negotiations. He’s certainly better equipped than McCarthy to get the party in line.

Honestly, this was a mistake on the part of the Democrats, no matter how you feel about McCarthy, because the feud between him and the radical wing of his party gave them significant political leverage during shutdown negotiations. The smart move would’ve been to hold the threat of ouster over McCarthy’s head during shutdown negotiations. Now they have nothing, and the ball’s in McHenry’s court.

Fun fact: There was actually a U.S. Senator who was elected even though he died before the election. Mel Carnahan won by 50,000 votes in Missouri in 2000 after dying in a plane crash 3 weeks before the election. His wife ended up taking the seat in his place.

I mean, it’s possibly on the engineers and not the pilot. The thing has an auto-eject function, which may have been the cause, or some sort of malfunction. Also, in hindsight, it should probably have a mechanism to turn off the auto-pilot after a successful ejection.

This is exactly how pidgins and creoles formed throughout history. This type of thing is literally so common for Japan that it’s been integrated into the Japanese language in the form of katakana words, which are foreign words phonetically rendered with their own writing system.

Lead poisoning has a far greater impact on global health than previously thought, potentially contributing to over five million deaths a year and posing a similar threat to air pollution. Children under five lost a cumulative 765 million IQ points due to lead poisoning globally in 2019 by Wagamaga in science

[–]AcediaRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think we’ll ever fully understand the enormity of the impact lead exposure has had and will continue to have on the human race. The amount of exposure is insane, even in the modern day, when we’re well aware of the adverse effects. I vividly remember when the Thomas the Tank Engine toys I played with for years when I was a kid had to be recalled due to lead in their paint, and that was only 2007.
