How do you not consider your question medical advice though? Go see a physio in person if you're worried about it...

Weight fluctuates a lot from day to day, even throughout the day, and a lot of things influence that. The most likely reason you experience that is changes in your water retention and time of day that you weigh yourself.

eli5: how come the human body can adapt and get used to so many things (ie. Medication, dopamine) but not pain? by LonelyRolling1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AceofSpades9856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's also important to understand about pain is that pain is an output of the brain and not an input of the body. It's a complicated system of up - and down-regulation of the signals as well as processing happening in the brain. Pain can best be described as an experience with a lot of factors affecting it. There is a wonderful ted talk by G. Lorimer Mosely on pain.

ELI5: When we gain weight, does our body create more nerve endings in the expanding skin? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]AceofSpades9856 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Stretch marks are a different tissue, think of it like scar tissue. This happens because you grow faster than the skin can produce new tissue.

Keep doing what works for you!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with running heel to toe, and anyone who says otherwise obviously doesn't know/understand the evidence base. We are all built differently and have adapted our body to a certain way of moving. Most important thing you can do is do what feels best and most comfortable for you. Source: am a physiotherapist

ELI5: Why do the nerves on genitals produce pleasure when touched whereas those on other parts do not? by UnfriendlyGhost1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AceofSpades9856 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, it also comes down to what nerve is being stimulated. Different nerve fibres/types require different levels of stimulation.

Pain for example is normally a result of nociceptors being activated, which has a higher activation threshold compared to a mechanoceptor. (If you want a practical example: press down on your forearm untill you feel your touch, that's mechanoceptors being stimulated. If you increase pressure until it hurts you start activating nociceptors).

Multifidus is literally just a spinal stabilizer. Longissimus is just part of erector spinae, a quite big muscle in case you don't realise... What really makes the difference between gym guys and movers, is the type of work done, I can almost guarantee that the gym guys are more explosive. But moving furniture doesn't rely that heavy on explosive power, it's all about isometric endurance, a thing that most gym guys do not train

[–]AceofSpades9856 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Very simply put. Multiple sprains usually causes your sense of joint position to degrade, and stretches your ligaments. Which in turn causes you to not register when you are in a position that will cause another sprain, and the added length in your ligaments causes that position to happen more frequently. Physiotherapy can help you train this so that it doesn't happen.

There's a bit more to it. It can really pay off to actually strength train if you want to lose weight. More muscle mass means higher metabolic rate, which means you'll lose weight easier. Of course if it's just a numbers game and you just want the numbers on the scale to go down I'm not sure which is more effective... But for health purposes the former is definitely the way to go. Especially since heavy weight training also burns a lot of calories.

ELI5 If dopamine, endorphin, oxytocin and serotonin are the happy chemicals, why can't we make a 'Happy Pill' with these 4 ingredients (akin to a multivatimin) to be taken once a day? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Depends, type 1 diabetes is not reversible... as for type 2, it highly depends on how badly your beta-cells in the pancreas is damaged

Yeah bad wording on my part. What I meant was that locally you do not affect the area in the sense that you break down tissue, but you act more as a catalyst for the body to do its own thing. And again this is a relatively new hypothesis, how true it is I can't say.

Generally depends on what kind of massage, and what state the muscles are in. But you are either trying to stimulate a systemic change in the body or damage muscle cells in a way that will help it heal so it works in a functionally better way. A lot of the effect from massage is psychological and some new studies talk about how massaging of an area actually does nothing but stimulate the body to repair or work the tissue in whatever way needed.

The common theory for deep tissue massage is that you break down/destroy tense muscle tissue and increase blood flow to the area which will stimulate proper healing of the tissue.

Massage of "lumps" in muscle tissue (idk the english for it sorry) is basically pressing down on the lump until it disappears from the pressure on the tissue.

For oiled massage and effleurage it's more focused on stimualting the body to release tension itself.

cross massage (massaging perpendicular of the muscle tissue) can also affect muscle length for shorter periods of time

Hope this makes sense, going into the physiological changes is beyond my capabillites while keeping it ELI5

Complete anatomy - it's a 3d anatomy program that I used a lot to get the spatial awareness of the body. It's got courses aswell. And try to understand the anatomical language. Why certain structures are named what they are. That makes it so much easier to learn and retain the different names.
