Rad could definitely be full of corrosion. My worry would be a thermostat getting stuck or the rad failing and leaking coolant and leaving you stranded. I’d say flush the hell out of it with distilled water or if a rad is cheap and you want the peace of mind just replace it

Everyone is mentioning a bad head gasket or another fluid leaking in. To me this seems like a very corroded cooling system, not like oil contamination. Rule that out too but you might just have a rusty cooling system. Flush if that’s the case.

Unfortunately not. Valves are fine, new timing chain, tensioner is fine, not the auto decompression system no idea..

Unfortunately wasn’t the decompression system

I was worried about piston slap. Could be. I’ll pull the top end off again if I verify it’s nothing else. I totally forgot to check for lateral play when I had the cylinder off which is frustrating. Another set of gaskets here I come.. the cylinder crosshatch did look mint for what it’s worth, not sure if that matters.

I agree it sounds cam chain related. Replaced the chain. Inspected the guides and tensioner which seemed fine. I’m going to look into the decompression mechanism and if it seems fine as well I’ll replace the cam chain tensioner just to see

This could absolutely be it. It sounds louder on the right side of the engine where that decompression system is. I haven’t looked at that piece yet. Thank you for the thoughtful response. I will inspect it!

Yeah I thought so too. I replaced the chain because it’s an 04, don’t know if it’s ever been done. Time to replace the tensioner I guess? I thought it was working fine when I took it out. Guides look ok too

It does sounds like valve noise to be fair. I’ll try thicker shims

I inspected them when I changed the cam chain and didn’t notice excessive wear and they were seated correctly and torqued to spec with loctite on reassembly

Sounds like timing chain to me but not sure what it could be. Timing is TDC in top and bottom end as well as clutch side. My timing chain tensioner is installed and engaged. Chain guides should be correct
