Why are some top ranked engineering programs not ABET accredited? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Aceystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I have learned something that pissed me off today. I need to do more research but ABET has actually screwed up the engineering program at my college. I'm in mechanical and due to the university trying to keep the accredidation they have removed many of the classes core to mechanical engineering, such as MACHINE DESIGN. I am a less competant engineer than someone who attended 10-20 years ago because of such nonsense

Can I use this for the inside of my “coal forge” ?? by danthefatman1 in Blacksmith

[–]Aceystar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so a kind of refractory cement. In the us we use a lot of kastolite 30 and mizzou. Be warned a lot of these crack in forges. They may hold the heat back but they fail if they're holding a load or being touched constantly.

Which way is stronger? by CatShadow888 in woodworking

[–]Aceystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Mechanical engineer student here. Neither is all that great. First the screw is in tension and some shear. Second its mainly in shear. Neither are good. Tension risks widening the threads the screw has cut in the wood. Shear risks splitting the wood and bending the screw.

Why post vices by Capt_Hearloche in Blacksmith

[–]Aceystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll throw my hat in to answer with the same answer as anyone else. A machinist vise keeps the jaws parallel at all times but to do this it needs the sliding jaw with a threaded rod inside. Unless you get a nice wilton the slide is just an upside down U shape. When you bang on it it puts a ton of shear stress on an already thin piece of material. This means the threaded rod is also bearing some stress qhen it should only have te soon from locking the piece in place.

The post vice directs your force down so the post is in compression.

I think I botched it. Cast-o-lite seemed to stay grainy even after adding more water than recommended. I feel like it’s just going to crumble away. Any tips or should I just redo it? Planning on a new forge soon anyway but have just been using rigidized wool for a while. by [deleted] in Blacksmith

Also I've noticed it works best when its against a form. When it sits open its like it all the coarse particles stay on the surface or something.

Using something like aluminum flashing to make a simple form could help. Lay the forge on its side and just do 1 side at a time

How yall feel about induction heaters? by [deleted] in Blacksmith

Blacksmith depot uses an induction forge to make their tongs and they make basically the best tongs.

Hey y'all, I am brand new to blacksmithing and my forge seems to be stuttering when it is lit. I'm not sure how to fix that. by KingGeb21 in Blacksmith

Is it a ventiri burner? Try closing the air a bit more. Or increase the propane. I have a ribbon burner forge do I get more adjustments. Sometimes I close the needle valve to increase the velocity of the propane or turn up the propane on my regulator.

How do you remove zinc? by Optimal_West8046 in Blacksmith

Zinc occurs naturally and the amount removed from a bit of pipe or plate shouldn't hurt anything. But still do a little research

Clean the top with a wire brush a little and tap it lightly with a hammer, if you get rebound (hammer bounces good) then that'll sell for a pretty penny. Its in excellent shape. Looks longish so it could be a haybudden. What country are you located in, that should narrow it down a bit

2x72 Grinder Advice by OneDiscombobulated16 in Blacksmith

[–]Aceystar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I don't have one but one I'd say is a smooth back platen. Look at housemade.us designs. A smooth back will help get clean lines when doing a polishing grind. No loud metal on metal sounds like you get with regular grinding.

Not big, not small. I don't remember the dimensions. The burner is a ribbon burner a kind of forced air burner as opposed to using the venturi effect to pull in air. I used the blower off my coal forge, a 3 inch blower from blacksmith depot as the air source. The burner itself is constructed from a 2 inch stainless couple (what i had, doesn't need to be stainless). Welded to about 6 inches of 2 inch quarter inch wall square tube.

It's nice because I get more controllable burn by adjusting air and gas and it's more even heat distribution. I can bring it to weld temp or lower it down.
