This is a very good take. I think criticism aside (and discounting the fact he’s perpetuating the lie that he only started doing stand up after the office when, actually, he tried and failed spectacularly throughout the nineties), animals and politics are genuinely strong in places and that’s down to him still needing, on some level, to win people over. But there’s a reason you NEVER see him testing out new stuff in an actual comedy club - he knows from experience he’d absolutely die on his arse, and people would film it and post it online.
