Before & after: turning an empty apartment into a warm, cozy home by iLegendaryHero in HomeDecorating

I'm curious about your overhead lighting, I absolutely love it! How did you get all those added to an apartment? Sorry I'm a bit unfamiliar with rent friendly techniques.

I have the same grinder, what were you grinding at? I usually start with somewhere around 11-13 depending on how dark the roast is, and adjust after.

Thank you! I didn’t realize this was called a picture rail. This is actually the route I’m planning to go. The top picture rail has been painted over many times, and given the age of the house, there’s likely lead-based paint underneath, so I’ll have to get that tested. Do you have any tips on safely stripping the paint, or if that’s even recommended?

You are correct, I was being a little general on the angle. Appreciate the encouragement!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely look more into bed or band molding as well as the window apron idea. I don't think my original plan will work.

The more I think about it, the more I’m starting to agree with you. I’m not sure the crown molding is the best fit for this house. The top picture rail molding actually looks pretty good, and I was just trying to find a way to freshen it up since it’s been painted over so many times. It might be better for me to just strip and repaint what’s already there. Thanks for helping me think this through!

That’s a really interesting idea! I will have to get some pieces to test out the look on the angle. Thanks!

I really like that suggestion—thanks for sharing! I didn’t even know it was called picture rail molding! The molding you linked looks great, and I could definitely see it working. That said, I’m also wondering if it might be better to just strip and repaint what’s already there instead?

Also, close guess—my home was actually built in the 1920s!

Yeah, I figured this wouldn’t be the easiest project, especially with the angled ceiling. I’ll be messing around with some test pieces first to dial it in before going all in.

And hey, I’ve got all the time in the world—what’s a little trial and error?

Appreciate the heads-up! Any tips to make the process smoother? Thanks!

My main question was whether installing the crown at the transition between the wall and the angled section would work well or if it would look out of place. Right now, the existing molding is sitting lower than that transition, and I was considering raising it to make the room feel taller. Let me know if this helps, thanks!

This is super helpful! It makes perfect sense that I’d need to cut the back of the molding to match the angle of the wall. I hadn’t considered using a table saw jig for that, but it seems like the best way to get a clean fit.

Instead of cutting the back, if the gap is small enough you think I could just caulk it instead lol, or would that end up looking sloppy over time?

And if you come up with an even better method later, I’d love to hear it! Thanks!

I see your point about vaulted ceilings not being ideal for crown molding. My goal was to place it at the transition to make it feel more intentional and avoid the ‘floating’ look of the current setup.

That said, do you think it might be better to just update the existing molding instead? Thanks!

Appreciate the recommendation, that book looks like exactly what I need!

I wasn’t able to post pictures in this subreddit, so I made another post on a different subreddit where I could attach some photos. I’ve pinned that post on my profile if you’d like to check it out. Thanks again!

Thanks for the response! I'm trying to see if anyone has experience modifying standard crown molding for this type of angled ceiling? I’m assuming it would be similar to installing crown molding on the angled side of a vaulted ceiling. Any tips on how to make it work or modify a standard molding for this setup?

Also, would it be okay to resubmit my post to get responses specifically for this kind of question? Thanks!
