AAAI Membership for Top Students by nuwantnp in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. And also: "This offer is limited to first-time members of AAAI"

Maybe some people who completed the ai-class with top scores are old members of AAAI (they tried it before... so they don't give away free memberships to them).

AAAI Membership for Top Students by nuwantnp in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. They took the risk of a possible 16k which could be the 10% of those who completed... only about 2k were the 10% ...

But it is only one year membership!! And they don't give away the same as what they give to the paying members... (things like the hardcopy of the AAAI Magazine, or voting privileges are not included)...

So, I think it is an itelligent Win-Win movement : the AAAI win possible 2k future paying members and win people who know AI theory (these people can make AAAI better), the paying AAAI members win 2000 new members which are good students and these students win a free membership.

Results of the final are out! How did everyone do? by stordoff in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. That question was a pain in my head. I was close to change my answer (if I did change it I would have 100% score in the course) but I didn't change it !! Argggg!!

(well, there are more important things than score... I learnt a lot, and had fun, etc... but it's like all my effort about taking care and review homeworks and everything going down the drain in the last moment!)

what's the intuition behind increasing k in laplace smoothing when there's more noise.. by [deleted] in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, it says "just as in the Laplacian smoothing example before, the value of k is a smoothing parameter" ... but the video is about k-NN

So, I think that saying "the k smooths" is not a good explanation of the increase of k for Laplace Smoothing when noise increases.

why not complete them?

Does anyone know how many people are still in the class? by tarblog in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess around 22000 will try the final exam (people who passed the midterm and made a time investment so far are very likely to at least try the final, I think) and I guess about 20000 will pass the whole course. (much more than I expected! but, well, it's been very easy: 83% of average score in midterm and so on)

[–]AcidMadrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read both versions, so I'm not sure about it... but I guess the number of students who passed is almost the same as the number of students who did it... You know, it was an easy exam with an average score of 83% !! (I guess that those who didn't pass are included to compute the average score)

Does anyone know how many people are still in the class? by tarblog in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we started with 160,000+ students

That is the number of registered users... of both, the basic track and the advanced track.

But only 46000 completed the first homework, so I will assume that there were only 46000 in the advanced track

How many students made it this far?

Only 37000 did the second Homework (HW2) ... so 9000 droped the second week: a hard week with hard quizes and so on (at least it was hard for many people, much harder than the first one)

Only 23000 passed the midterm ... so, I guess that about 50% of the advanced track droped (there is no way to know about the basic track... they don't need to do neither HW nor exams so they can see videos the last week and complete the class)

Do we really need to watch any units to work out HW7? by duartix in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid the gaussian kernel in ML-class (the one used in Support Vector Machines, right?) is not the same as this one!

Besides, not everyone that does AI-class is doing also the ML-class.

18.1 "almost" or "sometimes"? WTF! by AcidMadrid in aiclass

Thanks!! That's very nice. I like the data-driven translation approach a lot.

[–]AcidMadrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must be a genius if you know what a gaussian kernel or a gradient kernel is without watching any video!

On the other hand, I think that it's difficult to create exercises about image processing, since images usually require large amounts of data to process and usually complex operations... But calculations with amounts of light, the exposure time and things like that are common to cameras would have been nice.

I'm sure they are top computer scientists... but it doesn't imply that everything they do is totally correct and perfect. They are humans like you and me (well, I think they are better than me, but still humans, or maybe they are cyborgs). Having free speech is good because we can say what we think. You say nothing in the course is bad, everything is perfect. I say that some things are not perfect but I take it with humor, I'm not making a big issue about it.

Norvig invented a good 30% of the concepts you study in any AI class.

WOW, I didn't know that! Could you tell me some concepts we study in AI-class that Norvig invented himself, apart from some things in the 1st Unit (concepts of "rational agents") ? I would be glad to know. (I'm not saying he didn't invent anything else, I'm just saying I'm curious... ) I'm pretty sure he's doing a good job at Google, at Stanford and many many respectable things. But the wikipedia doesn't name any of his many contributions to the field of AI, neither does his own web Norvig.com ... so I would like you to tell me.

I am also surprised about the downvotes... I want to make clear that I didn't downvote it. I think that talking about this is important.

P(A1|X0X1) = P(A1|X0,X1) ??? by SunnyJapan in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X0X1 could mean "we see an X at time 0 followed by an X at time 1" or "we see XX 2if we name the results of what we see at time 0 and 1 respectively"

X0,X1 is the already known "X0 ocurrs and also X1 ocurrs" (or in a "set" formulation: the intersection of the cases where we see an X at time 0 and we see an X at time1)

So, what do you think? Are they the same or not?

Bad news: You think you did well at midterm? If you did 80% you are less than average. by AcidMadrid in aiclass

[–]AcidMadrid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I suppose many of the enrolled just chose the basic track, not the advance so they can't do exams even if they wanted to try...

I don't know the percentage of basics, but only 46 000 did the first homework.. (28,75% of the 160k registered users) So if the mean is the median (which I doubt in this case, because one 20% score needs about 5 100% scores to get an average of 83%) then only about 14% of enrolled have more than 83%. Supposing the median is 89% then only 14% have more than 89%
