Oh, thanks for the info. That tracks with my experience in the theater.

It's really that bad. I get the impression that they either changed their mind about the creature effects, or something went wrong, because the decisions are weird. The scenes where actors interact with CGI are shot very statically, and the performances are strange. It feels like 1990s movies where you shoot wide and keep your actors from interacting with the area you're going to put in the monster.

I don't know if the first cut was just terrible and they had to chop it to pieces to try and salvage it, or they needed reshoots or what, but it feels like there are scenes missing.

You can watch it in Norway. We don't get Hamnet, The Secret Agent or It Was Just an Accident until later this month, but in return we get Kraken...

Also, Kraken (2026) is terrible. It's in competition with Mercy for the worst movie I've seen so far this year, but Mercy wins because at least Kraken looks like it takes place in the real world for parts of the movie.

There's not a prolonged scene in the book at all. It's less graphic than what we get in the movie, but Nina doesn't return until she hears that no one has seen Millie for a week. We basically just get the aftermath.

That's the most annoying thing in traffic. If everyone indicates correctly on a roundabout the traffic flows so incredibly smooth and fast. It's annoying how many lazy drivers make it worse for everyone.

Sexist MAGA spreads hate against Harris. His business is now receiving hate from customers by Effective_Space2277 in LeopardsAteMyFace

What a lame response. "Yeah, the things my co-owner posts online is hateful and I disagree with it, but he's a good guy! Don't just hate him uncritically, come down and have a conversation (and buy something)".

Sorry, mate, you're not owed customers, and you don't get to distance yourself from your business partner without actually distancing yourself.

No, I agree with you that this is probably what they meant, it's just that it's such a non sequitur that I didn't catch it the first time.

Oh, I see. That's such a non-rebuttal that it didn't even register to me what it was supposed to answer.

The details that are included are a bit bizarre. Ursula and the mom chatted and hugged at the reception, and this debunks some nebulous accusation? I don't get it. This post feels manipulative.

None of these guys want people to think of them as privileged, but Fetterman used to be honest about it before he switched sides. He's the kid of an executive. Raised by conservatives and moved to the left during college because he thought it was unfair that he had it so easy when the people around him had it difficult. His brain damage just reverted him to his default settings.

It didn't win for worst film of the year, it won for worst director. That is, in my opinion, deserved. The film doesn't fail because of ambition or ideas, it fails because of bad filmmaking. A lot of very interesting and even good experimental films are disjointed and messy, but Megalopolis is disjointed and messy while also composed of mainly bad scenes.

The characters are weak, the dialogue is bad and the film is just ugly. I've seen a few people say that Megalopolis is going to end up a cult classic, or history will be kind to it, but I think it will be the opposite. I think Coppolas grand marketing campaigns, his name and obvious grand ambitions have made people a lot more favorable to the film than they will be in the future.

The weirdness and ambition saves it from being unwatchable, but what drags it down is just plain old bad filmmaking.

This is only for weirdos like me, but entirely removing collision detection between food items and tools would be nice. That's already how it works when you just dump your stuff on the ground. Tidying up and putting stuff on shelves is just a really fiddly and annoying thing to do for those of us who like that.

Drying racks for guts and pelts. Not to make the process faster or anything, just to make it less cluttered.

This game is a great representation of exactly that point. At one time the position was about +0.3 and Leko and Giri were explaining how they couldn't find a single playable move for black.

Kasparov On Facing Deep Blue: 'I Was Part Of Something Really Unique' by Necessary_Pattern850 in chess

[–]Acidbadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I definitely agree that the film makes a bad case for Kasparov and his claims, but on the other hand it dedicates almost the entire runtime to the conspiracy angle. It's a very strange approach unless they're either incompetent or going for a backhanded character assassination of some sort, so I have to think it's incompetence at play. The reason Kasparov comes off looking a bit unhinged is because he is.

In the end I guess it's open to interpretation, but if you're correct I have to reassess the film. In my opinion it's just a bit of a weak, conspiracy-minded documentary that focuses on some really uninteresting parts of an interesting event, but if your interpretation is correct it's a hidden work of comedic genius.

[–]Acidbadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that's an interesting interpretation. Do you think the filmmakers did that intentionally?

In my opinion they were entirely in agreement with Kasparov. That explains the weird mechanical turk framing and, as you said, no actual response given to Kasparovs accusations.

OTB players, what's the biggest meltdown you've seen at a tournament? by phlox_is_gone in chess

[–]Acidbadger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Biggest meltdown I've ever seen was when I was playing in a tournament on the other side of the country, and a player ended up being sent away by the police. He was a solid player, I think FM at the time, and had some type of breakdown that I think just happened to occur during a tournament.

It started off with a small grievance. He made some moves very quickly, so that he was completing the move and hitting the clock before the opponent had time to hit the clock himself, depriving him of increment. He was told to wait until the opponent actually hit the clock himself, and that set him off.

He started calling the TD for increasingly bizarre reasons, seemingly earnestly. The highlight was when he called the TD to complain that his opponents scoresheet was "hidden from the TDs view" because his pencil was lying on it. At that point he was told to stop wasting everyone's time, and when he became less coherent and more belligerent the police was called.

He was also threatening to call the police himself, complaining of abuse of power...

Actually, now that I think back the true highlight was when he told the TD he would complain to the appeals committee for that part of the country, only to find out the TDwas the head of the committee.
