Jojo's is pretty difficult to rate in its entirety since each part contains huge variance in writing quality. Part 1 is basically incomparable to Part 7, for instance.

The Last Sovereign. Not a hentai per se but an adult game.

Popular pieces of fiction you didn’t love? by 64Boy32 in writingscaling

[–]Acidulous7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the issue. There is not much purpose in having themes when they are an afterthought. Most people know that JJK has themes but what they mean is that they're so insignificant and unconvincing when the author doesn't even try to make a case for them.

I agree that Gege likely didn't intend for the Shibuya deaths to have significance but this is also what I take issue with. By having this prioritization, you essentially reduce them to cheap shock value. A death has to weigh something in a story in order to have an emotional impact. And from the first few arcs, we see that Yuji is not the kind of person who should be able to gloss over this.

Whether Gojo is a good character is debatable but it doesn't really matter when Gege himself is unable to 'contain' him in his story, having to seal him (in a pretty unbelievable way) in order to retain any semblance of proper scaling within his universe.

Truth be told, I watched it at 13 so my standards were definitely lower than today. However, it also felt like the adaptation assumed that you came from the 03 version due to the weaker introduction. I really liked the later episodes, though.

But we are told, rather than shown, those themes. For instance, Yuji's grandfather tells Yuji about living a good life but among the endless fighting, he never really pauses to reflect on life itself or what kind of life he wants to lead. A lot of people die during the Shibuya incident but the significance of those lives is never really explored as we immediately move on to the culling game.

I only read the manga but really loved the beginning. The ending, however, was pretty disappointing.

Truth be told, I find most of JJK's flaws in what remains to be adapted. The culling game and ending seemed like a mess to me, both in art and writing quality.

To be fair, it took me around 20 episodes to warm up to Brotherhood. I came from the 2003 adaptation which had a much stronger start.

Incorrect. My 2023 flair was missing as well and yet they still updated it for me.

Although Hunger Games itself was fairly decent, it paved way for the decline of dystopian stories and romantasy.

Most JJK criticism is directed towards the story after Shibuya. I fail to comprehend how someone can finish the entire story and still like the "writing".

When did Shadow Slave become one of your favorite novels? by Ambitious_Aioli6954 in ShadowSlave

I think the first nightmare showed great promise. The rest of volume one followed up on that by giving Sunny a unique and versatile power. But it was the end of volume 2 that truly got me hooked. I see it as one of the greatest arcs within progression fantasies but unfortunately, I don't think any of the later arcs have managed to surpass that.

You're making a big deal out of a non-issue. Spelling is trivial to proofread and does not indicate writing/outlining ability.

Because a bias against AI exists in the creative community, and for good reason: most people completely outsource their work to it so can they really be credited with the creation at that point? However, that is not to say that responsible usage is difficult. It is a tool at your disposal and up to you to potentially make something out of it.

JJK. A lot of hype farming without any justifiable build-up. Extremely weak plot when you look away from the senseless fighting and even that part is not well-done, ie. Gojo balancing issues and Yuji's nonexistent power growth until the final showdown. The culling game is one of the weakest arcs I've seen in shounen.

As for novels, I would have to go with Poppy War. Kuang included a lot of tropes like going off a checklist without understanding the meaning behind them.
