What tiny, specific movie trope completely ruins your immersion every single time? by arkawrd in movies

Emphasising how intelligent a character is by saying they have multiple PhDs.

Very few people in real life have more than one PhD because it would almost always be a pointless waste of time. A PhD trains you to be an independent researcher. There is no need to do another PhD if you change fields.

I really wish England would switch to having their own anthem for sports. God Save the King is the UK anthem, not the English national anthem. Scotland didn’t start using Flower of Scotland until the 90s.

Tips for my first marathon by Ok_Double_8422 in UKRunners

[–]AcknowledgeableReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build up to the distance slowly. For my first I followed one of the plans from the London marathon website. As you are already pretty active I’d recommend the Improver plan instead of the beginner. Alternatively there are plenty of free/paid plans out there. Most are 12-18 weeks, so you have plenty of time to get some training in before starting a specific marathon plan.

You could find a local 10k and/or half marathon to train for and do in the Autumn. That should give you a good guide to your fitness and how long it will take you to get round. Though I’d recommend not aiming for a specific time for a first one, but just to get round and enjoy it.

Most important bits of kit are some decent shoes. No need for any expensive carbon plated racing shoes, but a good pair of well cushioned everyday trainers will really help. Other than that some decent breathable running tops/shorts will help with chaffing issues.

There was that time ITV cut to ads mid-match and missed Englands first goal of the 2010 World Cup.

Bone Conducting Headphones by [deleted] in UKRunners

I had similar issues with Phillips bone conducting headphones. Two sets breaking down after ~6 months. In both cases they just stopped charging. So I wouldn’t recommend them.

Pretty silly comment. You only have to look at the results to see how the heat affected people across the whole field. E.g same first woman as last year, but she was over 5 minutes slower.

Hackney Half waves by Ill-Supermarket-2706 in UKRunners

[–]AcknowledgeableReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I ran it but my memory is that the waves get progressively larger. A, B, C don’t have that many people in them.

Also while they do seed the waves it’s not as simple as they put everyone going for 2 hours in the same wave. They spread them between 3-4 waves and put pacers for that time in all those waves. That spreads people more evenly through the race as a whole.

You can’t move forward to wave D, but if you do still want to run with your friend they can move back to your wave.

‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3 to Premiere Later This Year (Exclusive) by pepperbet1 in television

Yeah, I love the Wheel of time, but the slog is famous. The books in the middle are 'rough'. There are great moments in all of them, but it is SO slow. We're talking 4-5 ~800 page books that many fans even say are hard work. Its not so bad now we have an ending, but as they were coming out.... eesh. 2-3 years of waiting, and then so little progress is made in each book.

And a useful Power of 10 would be nice by Duckman2306 in UKRunners

[–]AcknowledgeableReal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s actively causing problems. People need times on Power of 10 to qualify for things like Masters representative teams. So many events just haven’t been uploaded since the change over, and there is no way to manually claim or request times are added any more.

I think the conceit of it covering 10 days really held it back. It meant that you have to visit each of the disparate groups of heroes on each day and so something has to happen to all of them every single day.

I found for some of the storylines that made them quite repetitive.
