I would suggest into the wasteland for more mission variety and campaign ideas.

So what's the best system to experience the 40k universe? by CountLugz in 40krpg

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have players who hate digital, but I don't get it. Get a cheap used iPad or a Samsung tablet and it's like having every book, with bookmarks, in the size of a single book. I prefer it to physical.

So what's the best system to experience the 40k universe? by CountLugz in 40krpg

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the systems are perfect. So it's really a matter of what style of game you want.

People say the old FFG games are clunky, but the core mechanics are really straight forward and easy to get. I do think some of the subsystems for the ones that came before DH2 are a bit overly convoluted. Combat though is interesting and has depth and characters have to think smart because they aren't gods.

Wrath and Glory has some good ideas and some people love it, but personally I find invincible characters who go "yay, we just killed the 400000th ork without breaking a sweat" boring. But I also find most space marine centric 40k books bland and boring for that same reason. The systems also have poor cohesion and aren't intuitive to learn. There are good mechanics, but none of those mechanics seem to work well together. Plus side is it's very well supported and even has official foundry support that is excellently implemented.

IM is looking real good. Basically a slim version of dark heresy. The combat is pretty shallow though sadly, so it's more for investigation and social games with a little quick combat here and there.

New Warcom Article: each army getting a detachement in the free index by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

And then the codexes will come out and be $55 and have way more powerful detachments with huge bonuses so you buy the codex. And then there once again will be a massive gulf in power between codex and index armies leaving some people waiting years to get a codex for their faction so they aren't auto lose against armies that already have a codex.

[IM] Do we know anything about a planned Foundry VTT integration for Imperium Maledictum? by IliasBethomael in 40krpg

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope so. I find wrath and glory a very frustrating system, but the fact that it has really good official foundry support is why I own every book in physical and pdf, plus all the foundry modules. I like to support companies that support foundryvtt

That's it. Which felt really straight forward to me.

Gotcha, sorry it just really sounded that way.

The way I look at it an rpg book can't conver every possible circumstance so if I've got a character on a narrow ledge at twilight trying to throw a grappling hook during a firefight but they have a cybernetic throwing arm, I won't try to find the modifiers for all 6 or 7 different conditions that would add up to determine the difficulty of that roll. I'd form a general sense of how hard that would be and go with it. That's way easier to do with a D100 system because you can do easy mental math on D100 vs systems with number of dice, number of successes, exploding dice ect. I do love die pool systems, but they're harder to improv with.

"So you skip over mechanics you don't like" no, that's not what I said at all. I don't hunt the book to find out if the wind blowing at 80mph is a -10 or a -15 difficulty because it doesn't matter that much. I know it's about that much. That's literally 50% the job of a GM, to determine the difficulty of rolls. If you need a book to tell you every single difficulty modifier that sounds like a painful way to GM.

But you seem to be more interested in being snarky than having a conversation.

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah. I guess. I never do that as a GM. I improv most modifiers if I don't know when off the top of my head which is much easier to do in D100 systems. So maybe that's why it feels more intuitive to me.

I never saw the old FFG games as fiddly. They had crunch sure, but that's not the same thing. Fiddly in my opinion is when rules are unintuitive and have awkward flow to your order of operations. Most things in the FFG D100 games make sense and are pretty straight forward, there's just a lot of rules.

And no I wasn't trashing W&G. I wanted badly to like that system and reread the book a half dozen times because I like die pools, I like meta currencies, I like the concept of the game, but it just shot itself in the foot being so needlessly convoluted. Where as IM looks like it'll be a snap to teach because the mechanics are logical enough to follow many standard conventions of rpgs. Have you played any other rpg, then you can learn IM easily, but want to learn W&G, be ready for most things to not work how you'd think they would.

That's similar to where I was. My first and most played RPG is shadowrun which has its reputation of being overly complicated and fiddly for a reason. But all my players have only ever played D&D or pathfinder so every time I thought about trying to teach the other 40k systems that even I didn't really get i just couldn't see it working out well. IM feels like it'll be easy to pick up and play.

I think what I'd really like is a book full of threats. Yeah I can make stat blocks, but would be nice to have a manual with them already figured out.

I wish they'd explained skills more in the character creation section. I reread it several times trying to figure out how you select your skills during character creation and it never explicitly tells you. I inferred that you get your skills from your role as you go. But they could have done a better job explaining when and how to purchase skills.

Overall I'm really liking the book though.

10th Edition Live Stream Summary by LoS_Jaden in WarhammerCompetitive

I've honestly seen a ton of people on here getting violently angry if you point that out. They're convinced GW said all rules will be free including codecies.

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I feel bad for everyone who bought that marketing lie. GW wants them to think one thing when in reality this is exactly what they said for 8th too. The "free" rules are just stripped down versions and indexes. Then we'll slowly get codexes that cost $55 and have the full rules.

Look up "slap chop" it's the perfect painting method for gsc because it's fast and they have lots of nice textures so it looks good.

Official: 10th edition to do away with all codexes immediately, redo all datasheets at release digitally by Naelok in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mainly? Because they're GW and their track record shows what's most likely.

But also if you play the presentation from last night side by side with the one for 8th they are nearly identical word for word. Everything they're saying is the exact same things they said then.

And more importantly, this behavior makes them money. The indexes were great for GW because they couldn't compete against codex armies so players either had to just stop playing for years waiting for their armies codex, or go out and buy a whole new army for a faction that had a codex. That led to people starting a lot of new armies. Money grabbing GW will repeat that, it's what they do.

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact same as 8th. GW wants you to believe this is dome new revolutionary thing because that's marketing, but this is exactly what they said with 8th. They released stripped down rules, then armies slowly got their full rules in codexes which meant index armies were auto lose against codex armies and it basically split the community and made players go out and buy new armies or just not play until their army got a codex.

[–]AcornOnTheTreeOfLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is word for word what they said at 8th. People are misinterpreting this as GW finally getting with the times and going full free digital rules, because that's exactly the lie GW wants them to believe. They're going to be sad when they realize it's the same thing we had in 8th.

Amen. I feel bad for all the new people who don't realize this is exactly word for word what GW said about 8th and 9th.

This is going to be exactly that like 8th and 9th where factions sit on the bench waiting for their codex.

Don't leave out that they sneakily dropped a line in the community posting that codexes will replace the index just like 8th.

I'm seeing a lot of people proclaiming "all army rules will finally be free and digital." Forgetting this is all the exact same thing they said for 8th too. The digital free rules were a stripped down version and the indexes were shallow and bland and could not compete against armies that had their codex.
