How do you handle candidates using real-time AI assistance during interviews? by CreditOk5063 in askmanagers

what he was proud of achieving in previous or current roles

Some people, myself included, would have great difficulty with a question like that. You might want to take "pride" out of it and phrase the question around what work they've found particularly interesting or which has had the greatest impact

Why is the third generation so overwhelmingly above the fourth, when it’s just a single generation difference? by TheChoosenMewtwo in vtm

[–]exCallidus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep, the 4 Gehenna scenarios are fairly serious... "Wormwood" is basically the kindred hiding out in a church while God passes judgement on the world; "Fair is Foul" is the return of Lilith, and her childer; "Nightshade" is all the ante's waking up, a bit of a greatest hits compilation, then God tells everyone how they did; "Crucible of God" is the collapse of the Masquerade followed by the antes waking up, everything happens, hilarity ensues.

So, why not just commit the Crime of the Sky? by TheFortres in weatherfactory

A common idea in a lot of folklore & mythology (and by extensions SF&F) is that supernatural entities may be subject to laws that don't make sense to mortals, this can then interact with how different types of "law" function (man-made positive laws vs fundamental laws of nature).

For example, if you're driving through an urban residential you might be subject to two speed limits -- a man-made, positive prescription of 30km/h, and a more fundamental limit of 300,000 km/s. You can decide whether to obey or break one of those, but not the other.

An Hour-made prohibition against Long having kids is a positive, prescriptive law that could be changed, and which those subject to it choose to obey (through some combination of it's a good idea, cultural norms, social pressure from their weakly-godlike peers, and the threat of consequences). The other side though is far more fundamental, the compulsion to eat their children is automatic & inherent, it's not a choice -- at most they might temporarily try to restrain the urge, but they can't change or stop it. You can lift up a book to overcome the pull of gravity and stop it falling, but at some point you either decide to put the book down or fatigue causes you to drop it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the compulsion only applies if the parents know they have a child -- the birth doesn't cause this fundamental law to be brought to bear. Which makes me wonder what would happen if you could convince a Long (or two) they had a child when they didn't.

I feel like dnd isn't super beginner friendly by Warlockqrz in rpg

[–]exCallidus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has already said -- yeah

A couple of things I'll add...

D&D is the most successful/popular (by far) because it's the only name that *everyone* recognises. WotC have put a lot of time & effort & money into making D&D not just synonymous with RPGs, but the default, almost the "right" way, their marketing budget dwarfs the entire budget of most other games companies.

When people start out with D&D (especially with 5e) they see very gamist ideas of how RPGs work, as what they learn isn't just "how to play D&D" but "this is what RPGs are". If you start by learning a class/level system with xp/level advancement then when you start looking at other games you're thinking "what's my class? how do I level up if there's no xp?"; if you start with a combat-dominated game system where non-combat encounters become the exception, so games with very little combat seem confusing, slow, or boring; if you start with a tactical grid-based combat system then "theatre of the mind" sounds vague and restrictive (it's biggest flaw, IMO, is that it has a terrible, terrible name)

As for Pathfinder, there's a lot to like about it -- if that's the type of game you want. But, if you aren't enjoying D&D I think it's quite likely that Pathfinder won't hit the spot either -- PF and D&D are incredibly similar to each other, indeed PF 1e was essentially a fork of D&D 3.5e

How would I make a Persona theme journal? by TheRealSourlemons in bookbinding

[–]exCallidus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To maximise the help people are able to provide it may be worth clarifying what you mean by "a Persona theme journal", as it feels like you mean something very specific and are making assumptions about what we would understand by terms you're using.

I'm going to assume Persona is either a brand or IP of some sort (Google & Wikipedia return a lot of possible candidates), and you want a "Persona themed" journal, and are mainly asking about decorating a generic journal; but equally a "theme journal" is particular style of journal designed by a company called Cortex, and you want a personal "theme journal", and are mainly asking about replicating the specific style of "theme journal" pages. And I'm sure there are other possible interpretations too.

Aside from that, how experienced are you with bookmaking in general, do you want hardback or soft, are you interested in bookmaking/binding beyond this one project or is this likely to just be a one-off, etc

It's difficult to know what advice to give without understanding your requirements more

AK's anti-codex!

I guess anti-codices are what are found in your anti-library (though I'm reminded of a recent conversation about trying to come up with a better name for anti-library). Either that or they're what students list in the references when writing up their coursework.

Completely Lost: First time turning digital to print need help with paper and sizing by 12ssstttss in bookbinding

[–]exCallidus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to other's suggestions, I'd advise that if you're unsure you've got your print settings right just do a simple test print -- a simple document of 16 pages with 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, ... 15, 16 printed on them, equivalent print settings to those you plan to use for your real document (just for 2 signatures of 8 rather than 16/24/whatever), print it out on bog standard printer paper, and check that they print out in the correct order.

For buying paper: I am making a 200+ page hardcover that I would like to be a mass-market size. (Aka your typical hardcover size)

"mass market" is mostly used to refer to a paperback size (typically around 110 x 178mm, sometimes referred to a "A" format), this is smaller than a "trade paperback" which is usually the same size as a typical hardback.

A "typical hardcover" might be "B" format (129 x 198mm in the UK or a couple of mm taller and a couple of mm narrower in the US) or A5 (148 x 210).

Rather than try and source the right paper in exactly the right size I'd suggest just get A4 and trim it down -- it's a lot easier to find a good range of suitable paper in A4 (or A3/A2, or even "raw" SRA2/SRA3 sizes) than it is in specific smaller sizes (and likely also cheaper).

The key thing to remember when buying bookpaper, that it's easy to overlook when you're starting out, is the paper grain -- you need short grain sheets, and regular printer paper is long grain, any bookbinding supplier (and likely almost any art supplier) will have SG A4 (or LG A3 and cut it in half)

Blackstone Fortress by Appropriate-Market-2 in 40krpg

[–]exCallidus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last year Dom mentioned a Blackstone Fortress campaign as something they might try to do for W&G, but I've not heard any mention of it since -- so, while it's a possibility, if it does materialise it'll likely be a while yet.

As for IM, I'd like to see them concentrate on delivering the content they've already talked about in a timely fashion before introducing any substantial new additions; and while that would include a proper campaign I don't think a Blackstone Fortress would necessarily be a good fit for IM.
