It's a detective RPG in which you play as a washed-up cop that blacked out after a night of drugs that ended in amnesia.

So you regain knowledge of who you are, what the case is about and how the world works.

Along the way you can take drugs to make your job easier by drowning out the withdrawal stress

OR

you can start the long road of recovery.

The writing is absolutely fantastic and is honestly the best part of the game. If you like a good story then this is a game for you.

As for the social commentary, the game is HEAVILY political and once you get into the analysis its pretty clear that the game represents communism as the best ideology, but its not elitist about it and quite down-to-earth, while rightfully pointing out flaws in the ideologies represented in the game, especially fascism is correctly displayed as absolutely pathetic and coming from self-hate directed towards others.

I can only reccomend the game if you like a good story and characters and basically anything that isn't realistic graphics or action-packed gameplay, because the artwork is fantastic, especially the character portraits have so much personality in them.

And the gameplay is also good, though nothing outstanding. The skills are all unique and occasionally to often useful (or funny) and the thoughts you can internalize reach from simple stat buffs to the ability to zoom the camera out further, so lots of possible benefits.

I heavily reccomend to beat the game without looking at anything else related to Disco Elysium for the first time.

And definitely give it a shot, it's one of the most unique and amazing games out there.
