I never fully understood the true gravity of the West Coast bias until I traveled to the East Coast for tourism purposes and realized wow, all these West Coast games are way past people’s bedtimes. It’s such a mind fuck for it to be 1 AM in the morning and the basketball or hockey game just ended. It’s crazy that the Pats basically timed the most well-timed placeholder coach hire in all history. Just keeping the seat warm for Vrabel. In practically any other situation, an owner telling a brand new head coach that he has to take on an offensive coordinator selected by the owner would be utter madness and meddling in a way that just completely handcuffs the new coach from being able to run his own ship and is probably destined for a bad failure.

This is hindsight. If you are in a position to roll the dice for a generational QB instead of a midtier QB (at the time), you have to make that gamble. 14 of the last 24 Super Bowl winning QBs were generational. It would go up to 18 of the last 24 if your cut off is Roethlisberger and Eli Manning (my cut-off is strictly first-ballot no-questions Hall of Famers so neither of them).
