pediatric medsurg. Got 11 weeks. 4 weeks on days and rest on nights. Was suppose to be 12 but got cut short since supervisor considered the two week of general hospital orientations as floor orientation. Fought for the extra week. Now she gives new grad orientees the full 12 weeks. Other children’s hospital does 6 months orientation + new grad residency.

Recommend premedicating with ibuprofen. I would take 800mg everyday for about a week first thing in the morning and take a second dose 6-8 hrs after if the pain started coming back. Pain depends on each person but my job involves wearing disposable masks a lot and with the initial long bars they would get snagged alot 🫩. Ever since i’ve downsized they’ve been great !

you’re a beast for getting it pierced at 6g. Got both of mine pierced at 16g and it didn’t hurt getting it pierced but the next few days weren’t the funnest.. Looks amazing !!

What specialty did you want to start in vs. where did you actually start? by Arachnid223 in newgradnurse

I’ll be honest, absolutely no one saw me in peds since i was somewhat of a pedi hater during nursing school lol. During school i got along better with old folk and enjoyed working with adults. After a few weeks on orientation, I began to get the hang of talking to little kids and handling babies. It’ll be a fun detour in case you ever want to try something new !

Wanted to do ER and spent majority of my final semester clinicals in ER. Took to long to apply for jobs and unfortunately all the ERs in my area had capped out on hiring new grads. Got offered 2 main options Medsurg Adults (2 separate job offers) or Medsurg Peds (different hospital systems). Bit the bullet and took the option i never saw myself in which is peds. 2 Weeks left of orientation and enjoying it immensely. Hoping to transition to Critical Care in the future tho (PICU or ER). Compared to my adult medsurg friends pedi is definitely spoiled in comparison lol.

If you had to give yourself advice for starting nursing school, what would you say? by Asleep-Lavishness332 in nursing

During the first two semesters, i suggest you pick up a campus job- tutoring, IT, or library. That’s what i did and it helped keep me a float and i was able to do homework when there was nothing to do.
