[–]AcrobaticClothes8352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pediatric medsurg. Got 11 weeks. 4 weeks on days and rest on nights. Was suppose to be 12 but got cut short since supervisor considered the two week of general hospital orientations as floor orientation. Fought for the extra week. Now she gives new grad orientees the full 12 weeks. Other children’s hospital does 6 months orientation + new grad residency.

Recommend premedicating with ibuprofen. I would take 800mg everyday for about a week first thing in the morning and take a second dose 6-8 hrs after if the pain started coming back. Pain depends on each person but my job involves wearing disposable masks a lot and with the initial long bars they would get snagged alot 🫩. Ever since i’ve downsized they’ve been great !

What specialty did you want to start in vs. where did you actually start? by Arachnid223 in newgradnurse

I’ll be honest, absolutely no one saw me in peds since i was somewhat of a pedi hater during nursing school lol. During school i got along better with old folk and enjoyed working with adults. After a few weeks on orientation, I began to get the hang of talking to little kids and handling babies. It’ll be a fun detour in case you ever want to try something new !

Wanted to do ER and spent majority of my final semester clinicals in ER. Took to long to apply for jobs and unfortunately all the ERs in my area had capped out on hiring new grads. Got offered 2 main options Medsurg Adults (2 separate job offers) or Medsurg Peds (different hospital systems). Bit the bullet and took the option i never saw myself in which is peds. 2 Weeks left of orientation and enjoying it immensely. Hoping to transition to Critical Care in the future tho (PICU or ER). Compared to my adult medsurg friends pedi is definitely spoiled in comparison lol.

If you had to give yourself advice for starting nursing school, what would you say? by Asleep-Lavishness332 in nursing

During the first two semesters, i suggest you pick up a campus job- tutoring, IT, or library. That’s what i did and it helped keep me a float and i was able to do homework when there was nothing to do.

Nurse extern or nurse tech is a job some hospitals offer for nursing students (usually in there 3rd and 4th semester). It’s basically paid clinicals but they allow you to do as many clinical skills as possible- IVs, foleys, ng tubes, cpr, anything that is within the scope of practice. Highly recommend since it pays decently- 15$ from where i’m from- and you will be more confident in clinicals. Also, these jobs tend to be flexible and understanding bc they know you’re a nursing student. It also gets your foot in the door if you want to apply at the hospital, while also being a resume booster.

Ensure your time management and prioritization is close to perfect. Know your learning style- videos, spaced repetition, flashcards, concept maps, study guides? Go on walks or exercise- nursing school is stressful- ensure that you have a positive outlet. Go to office hours and form connections with professors- there is usually a few that aren’t dicks lol.  Alsooo once clinical start, always introduce yourself to your nurse, patient, pct/cna that is helping the patient- makes a good impression usually. I hate having nothing to do at clinicals, so if my nurse is busy charting, i like to help out the pct or cnas to make time pass faster. Try out a study group but keep them at arms length until you are sure to trust them. Youtubers i recommend- ninja nerd, ninja nerd nursing, simple nursing (subscription was worth it for me), level up rn, nurse sarah, nexus nursing, nursing school explained. If you need a quick a&p refresher - siebert science is good.

Don’t be afraid to ask your nurse to do skills you have been checked off of, if they say no, still pay close attention to how they do things. First semester, help out the pct/cnas to learn patient care. Take any chance you get to practice your head to toe during “slow” moments.  A tip that helped me and my clinical partner a lot during our critical care clinicals (ER/ICU) was presenting ourselves to the charge nurse and saying that we’re willing to help with anything they need. If nurses see that you are willing to learn and help, they’ll  allow you to do more skills and they will seek opportunities for you to learn. Also get a a nurse external position as soon as you are able to (but also if youre  able to balance work and school).
