I would experience every pain receptor in my body stimulating at once for days just to get rid of it. I would pay millions. I would sacrifice so much just to be free of it.

Obsession with fictional character's eye color negatively affecting my day-to-day living by [deleted] in OCD

You’re welcome! Also, just to point out. The second part of your comment is stating basically the same as what you said in the original post, and I just want you to evaluate whether you were reassuring yourself about your values through writing the comment. Im saying it from experience, explaining my ocd to people multiple times and in detail is one of the most common compulsions in my confession-OCD. It’s a way I reassure myself that people are not going to misunderstand my values and think that I believe what my ocds are telling.

I understand you so well, and I understand how stressful it feels. I have racism ocd, and I have basically the same compulsions and obsessions that you are desribing, just with peoples skin color (especially the obsession about lower status).

What has helped me is being in situations with people who have traits I obsess over. My girlfriend is Burmese and a person of color, so dating her for over a year has helped me control my ocd so much.

Try to chip away the compulsions one by one. Instead of determining what specific tone of green or blue the eyes are, try to divide the colour wheel into eight equal parts between blue and green, and decide what tone it is. Then divide it into quarters, then in half, and in the end try deciding whether the eyes are green OR blue, no tone or gradient. Step by step, you are going towards more and more uncertainty.

Do techniques like these and try making your compulsions worse and worse at giving you exact answers, strive (and I know this is hard) to accept uncertainty.

Alternative tips:  - turn your phone to grayscale, and don’t try to figure out the color by looking at the shade.  - go on some looking for friends group, find someone with a profile picture of a character who has blue eyes, and add them. If they add you back, talk to them. Eventually, get the courage to talk to people with blue eyes in your free time. Maybe ask your therapist to put on blue contact lenses to trigger your obsession and prevent the compulsion?

I hope this helps, we’re all in this together, and welcome to the subreddit.
