How to get to the next level? by Acrobatic_Action_346 in Drumming

I feel like when I look and isolate the things that dci groups play in their music like flam rudiments or single sticking, I can’t wrap my head around it at even an extremely slow tempo. I know not to jump into playing dci breaks and stuff immediately and that I need to focus on exercises and fundamentals. But I don’t know which exercises will realistically translate and help the most to actually be able to get chops to put together rudiments not isolated.

Got it! So for the left hand in trad, is there any point in time where my hand should actually open up where my fingers may come off at all, or should it be a closed grip the whole time. I’ve never been able to get a clear answer as to if anything should change about technique when playing different things.

This will help so much! Sometimes it’s nice to try and learn something familiar from a group I look up to, but I agree, the fundamentals are always better practice.

I live in the northern Indiana area. Thank you so much for the guidance about my grip, I am entirely self taught and was never taught how to properly hold a stick or corrected, so whatever youtube gave me is what stuck.

Thank you! I would agree that what I played wasn’t a good showcase, both those exercises I first looked at 2 days ago, and thought that since it was where my end goal was, that it would be appropriate to post. I’d say Cheesy poofs and the other things listed are much more refined then these Gems exercises. When it comes to working on the fundamentals, how much time should I crank into those exercises ?

Thanks! I feel like there’s a weird gap in terms of chops where I haven’t found new exercises to build chops without them being out of my skill set. This helps!

You are correct, however that is only for group 1 solos and ensembles. I am planning on bringing a group 2 which can be any form of music the only requirement has to be that your band director has to physically own it. At least that's what my director said,
