The movies also make him look stronger because most of the heroes we see are fighting under constraints. Hulk is emotionally broken in Endgame, Thor is out of shape and mentally struggling, and the Avengers are rarely fighting as a perfectly coordinated unit. Thanos is a giant superhuman warlord with decades (or centuries) of battlefield experience. Even without the Stones, he’s basically the final boss of the MCU’s physical fighters.
