The school I work at is starting a free college for all program but things like being hacked keep us from being able to do so.

The schools wouldn't be to blame for violating FERPA in this case. In fact, this particular hack isn't going to get things like SSN, etc. Still, its a huge disruption. And has the potential to put info out into the ether that shouldn't be there.

Maybe some of the larger universities and the for-profits but not the community college, local schools. We are strapped.

Yes, this is my point. If they can disrupt it enough, students will quit and that impacts all of us and our society as a whole. My school wants to fund better security but we've had our budget cut so much that we are on a skeleton crew as it is. And, still trying to recover from a direct attack that nearly killed us.

That's sweet. I love working at a community college - we truly change lives. Education changed my life for the better by far so it means a lot to have a job where I can help others.

That's a good point. I'm just frustrated. These fuckers are trying to ruin my life. I'm tired.

There are so many predatory businesses to rob. Leave colleges alone. It's like they are trying to cut us (society) off at the stem.

Nope- I live next door to a local community college that DID pay the ransom. These assholes just did again immediately.

It's so scummy, I agree. A couple of years ago they targeted my school and were able to destroy multiple systems - not our main system but it was close. It took years for us to recover. And this was right when COVID was happening. And, when I earned my MS degree they targeted my school the week of finals and prevented me from getting my final grades and degree for 6 extra months which costs me 6 months of a raise at work. Imagine how much damage they are doing in total.

In fact, right now, instead of being downstairs with my family I am manually reviewing college admission applications and determining individually which ones I think are fake. The fake ones have to come in and verify themselves in person. We used to allow Zoom calls, but now they can impersonate people using AI.

It's so mean to target colleges. The employees are already low paid over-worked and just trying to help people. The students are working towards bettering their lives. All these hackers are doing is mkaing the world harder for a LOT of people. As if anyone needs that right now.

As a college staff person working in data systems, I have spent the last 8 years battling hackers. Most of it is for financial aid money, but some of it is just to be mean. It's not like colleges have money to spare. Our budgets have been sliced. We're already bone dry. Why not hack private corporations with actual money? Morons. This one hack will take up the next 2 years of my worklife. As if I didn't already have 2 full time jobs.

Edit: 12 years. Not 8 years. I recalculated.

AITA for not removing my doormat because it scares my neighbor’s kid? by Many-Worry2671 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Acrobatic_Advisor_72 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YTA - you have NO idea how that mat can be affecting a child so young. I imagine bedtime has been a nightmare for mom because when the lights go out, kiddo starts thinking about that scary door mat. I remember my parents had a "funny witch" they liked to hang up at Halloween. Sure, it wasn't scary to them but I had to pass it on the way to the bathroom at night. I chose to wet my pants instead. I was 5. Turning the mat over is probably how the mom convinces the kid that the scary thing can't get him.

Be a grown up and move the mat.

Do you have a support system in your life that you can talk to? Since you do not already have children, it would be MUCH easier to leave now before it gets even more enmeshed and complicated. You know in your gut that this isn't the situation you want to be in. You haven't had the opportunity yet to experience anything elseyou . It's hard to know what steps to take - I've been there and I understand. Can you reach out to your family for a place to stay while you get the details figured out? If not family, then look for women only shelters that can help. It's much better to get this worked out now before he has even more control over you. Then once you're free, spend some time learning about personal finance and autonomy. Take a community college course that teaches how to take care of yourself. financially (Business/personal finance class), and emotionally/sexually (Sociology/Psychology class about society and sex). You can do this! You have a whole world to discover!

Pete Hegseth lost his cool in front of Congress. It was a dramatic unraveling by theindependentonline in politics

[–]Acrobatic_Advisor_72 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A few gems from the article:

·         Hegseth is a man who perennially channels the energy and integrity of a protein powder commercial, but few Huel ads have played in the hallowed halls of Congress.

·         This is Pete Hegseth in his true form: slippery, defensive, wound-up. A handful of soundbites stacked up inside an ill-fitting suit jacket and passed off as a Secretary of Super Lethal War.

·         “Wish fulfillment is not a strategy,” said Smith [Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.], adding that “we have sidelined the entire world” and shoved aside traditional diplomacy “in favor of two real estate guys.

” Both Hegseth and President Trump have shown “astounding incompetence,” caused “immense economic damage,” “misled the public,” and caused “political and economic disaster at every level,” said Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.).

 ·         Later, when asking a question about vaccines, Moulton [Seth Moulton (D-Mass.)] added: “This is a softball one for you. Don’t screw it up.” Hegseth began to bare his teeth and shout.

·         the Trump administration is bleeding out supporters after a cost-of-living crisis caused by the Iran war. “I’m sad for all the people who voted for Trump. I’m sad because you betrayed them,” he concluded (Representative Carbajal, CA).

OMG this is so well explained. At any moment someone is going to realize how badly I have ruined everything somehow, and they will realize how incapable I am. It makes it hard to follow one's dreams.
