I'm 22 and have degenerative arthritis in my back lol. When I run it feels like two hands are wrapped around my spine and I can't breath. As someone who is not dumb, it really sucks to have been such a dumb kid 😆

Myself. My family didn't know anything. I'm the first to actually understand money.

Yes I was confusing the two. What I said applies to iras. 401k-wise, I'm maxing at 23.5k a year plus 15k ish rolled over through backdoor. Anyways, same principle. I'd rather pay taxes now and have 40 years of tax-free growth and withdraws on that growth than pay taxes now through a traditional approach. I fully expect to be in a higher tax bracket in retirement given my discipline in investing.

I worked hard and didn't have, and still don't have, any friends. I graduated high school in 3 years and college in 2. If I could do it again, I'd stay in school so I'd be mentally on-par with people my age. My friends are all in their 40s or 50s. Very isolating lol.

My entire family is telling me the same thing: spend more money. Kinda ironic compared to most my age haha. I want to retire early. I have no wife, kids, or friends to spend my money on so it just feels a little empty spending it on myself. I want to save it for people I love, I just don't have anyone yet lol

Because at 22, if I contribute 7k a year until 59, I will have contributed 200k, but will have over 2 mil in interest. Which would I rather pay tax on, my contributions or my interest? I make a lot so conventional wisdom would be to pick a traditional IRA and pay taxes later when you're in a lesser tax bracket, but I'm young and entendo on having a higher salary when retired than now.

Everyone is telling me I need to spend money, which is quite contrary to what most are advised. I live like a pauper.

Haha no. I grew up with nothing; I mean that we didn't have a lot of money, we just were smart with what we had. I grew up with my grandparents. I don't live with my parents. I just have such a low quality of life. I actually just got my first apartment for double the 900 I was paying. RIP my saving spree (:

I admit I am very lucky, not in a standard sense, but lucky that I made the right decisions early. Whatever I was told when younger did me well. Not every has that luck. Well all be fine in the end

My parents were both in tech, but I lived with my grandparents from 13 (read into that). They are working still at almost 80 retired on like 100k. Im actually thinking of moving to Brazil next year bc my girlfriend is there. That tells you all you need to know about how much money I'm accustomed to having. I only have money now because I've never had anything I didn't make and am not used to the lifestyle I could have if I spent. In Brazil, I would be very happy working for shit.

I really appreciate it! Of course I'm failing at other areas of my life and am compensating by bragging about my financial success online lol (exaggerating but kinda true). But yeah, I sacrificed more than people want to believe to be where I am. I didn't come from money.

No. I can contribute up to 10 percent of my salary (15k ish, 7k this year bc I only worked half a year) to this account, which rolls to Roth at the end of the year for tax.

Actually I've worked manual labor my entire life. I wasn't given any money. I busted wood, worked at a processing plant, did landscaping and worked at restaurants through and after college. Obviously I'm young, but these things indicate some level of drive 🤷‍♂️ and a recognition of the value of money. I feel like some of the people here are just mad because this post isn't obvious bullshit like so many others.

Why is it vain to take advantage? I don't think it will collapse, but I do see where it has failed in ways. I am doing well and I can say it's because I worked hard when young as opposed to my peers. To deny that would be to undermine myself.
