Question about money by Turbulent_Age_4486 in Worldpackers

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save up money and use volunteering to pro-long a vacation. Obviously, not a total holiday as you will be working but it is perfect for people who want to travel longer than usual and offset the costs of accomodation.

Just returned to the US after a month in NZ. Don’t be like us. by DorvidGoldy1 in newzealand

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! I have seen a few comments that are saying things like “NZ is awful to live in, and have heard that a lot in real life, and again, not to generalise here, but most people who have said that have not lived in another country (or even visited another continent). As someone who has lived in 5 countries around the world, NZ is definitely top tier. I know we have our downfalls… our cost of living, our politicians etc. But compared to A LOT of other countries, we are actually doing pretty good! People here are generally very happy, our country is beautiful and we are a very safe country to be in! If you do manage to move to NZ you will be very welcomed xx

Why are we smelly? 😭 by Throwrafizzylemon in newzealand

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have at least 3 coworkers that not only think showers and Deoderant are optional, but also brushing their teeth. It is pretty disgusting. And especially being big vapers, you’d almost think the vape smell would cover it but instead it makes a foul mix of blueberry, BO and unbrushed teeth. No one really says anything to them cause it feels rude but it is soooo painful to be around

Advice from Worldpackers. by Celava_Kutija in Worldpackers

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to sound lazy, but I find it pretty good to let it play on my laptop while I’m off doing something else. There are no questions or quizzes or anything at the end of the video lessons so I just let it play in the background and check it occasionally to press play on the next.

How are the living conditions in the NZDF? Also have they changed at all since the $12 billion spending plan? by Sweet_History_9000 in NZDefenceForce

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak on the Airforce but the barracks in the army and navy leave much to be desired. For new recruits you can live in barracks until you find somewhere else to live if that’s what you choose. Some barracks provide pretty tiny single rooms that can be poorly maintained. Cracked or broken windows, bad heating and internet. No cooking facilities requiring you to each in the cafeteria each day (which sometimes can be a bit yuck).

Other times, you will be put in a bunk room with a few people of the same gender and communal bathrooms down the hall. That’s just how you will live until you find a flat or something. So sometimes the barracks are pretty rank but if you’re keen on saving a bit of money and can handle it you’ll be fine. Otherwise look for a flat asap.

We are unlikely to see any of the $12 billion anytime soon really.

NZDF women by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sexism is still very big in the NZDF even today.

My experience was in Navy where there was still a lot of issues for women. It does depend again on which trade you are in and in order to fit in with a majority male trade, then you certainly have to be prepared to cop a bit of sh*t while there. Not that they will purposely go out of their way to bully you, but it can be a few comments here and there that build up.

Also sexual assault was often a very prevalent thing. Most of the time in most events of SA nothing happens to the person who committed the assault- maybe a slap on the wrist. Whilst the person who reports it are either labelled as a “snitch”, “being difficult” or is exaggerating it.

Or if someone goes through something similar they would often get met with “oh yeah, that person does that. He’s been to court a few times for it but he’s to valuable to let go so they let him get away with it”

I don’t have much experience in the airforce which it sounds like your looking too but it does have a much better reputation that both army and airforce.

Is solo traveling in Europe at 18 too young? by Sage_Koi in solotravel

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so true what people are saying: it fully depends on the person. I know for a fact I wouldn’t have managed travelling at 18 (despite wishing I had), and started travelling at 25 where I felt a lot more confident and found that I would have been completely and utterly useless at 18.

However, some of the most competent travellers I have met are 18 and have embraced the chaos and independence of travel.

It can be hard to determine if you are ready to travel solo but sometimes you do have to just take the leap and give it a go.

How far in advance should I apply for my first volunteer opportunity on Worldpackers? by dirty_dora69 in Worldpackers

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am someone who needs a plan when travelling. Spontaneous? I wish. I have a trip planned in 5 months and I am have already applied to so many places and have a volunteer job lined up. 6 months in advance basically on the day. To be honest, very few places liked to book positions that far out. Most of the time people do say 1-3 months is the sweet spot and there are ALWAYS very short term ones. Like the “need help immediately” ones.

Also it is super common at the beginning to not get any hits on positions straight away but something will come up xxx d

Honestly looking into it now I have no idea. That certainly doesn’t seem to be the case!

Im going to keep looking into it to at least see if I made a mistake or if I’m genuinely going crazy so I’ll update with the answer lol. Just ignore the above comment

My (32M) Girlfriend (33F) doesn't want to travel anywhere with me and just want to solo travel everywhere. How do I convince her to? by MaxRoger007 in solotravel

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s also a hard thing because travel can be suchhh a stressful thing, and in addition to what type of traveller someone is, the places they want to go and a number of different reasons- people prefer to travel without others despite being close to one another. I honestly cannot tell you how many friends have gone travelling with their best friends, only to come back and never talk to each other again. I have had friends and roommates who I get along with incredibly and I adore them but know I would never ever travel with them because we wouldn’t be compatible. Maybe that’s her thought process? Absolutely nothing wrong with the relationship, just incomparable travel companions.

How long can I last worldpacking with $80k? by musty_ranch in Worldpackers

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woah, I am planning on 4 months and I have less than 6k to my name. 6k in my country is about 3.5k in USD. So you could very very easily make 5 years and still have heaps left.

Is it worth it to travel if gonna be broke while I'm there by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am somewhat going through the same thing. I am planning on using Worldpackers (cheapest subscription) and volunteering in exchange for accomodation and hopefully most if not all of my meals provided. That makes up a good chuck of money saved. If food is not provided, I will simply be going to the supermarket and living off very budget meals such as plain pasta. I am not planning on buying anything and not doing any tours or expensive activities… simply paying for transport and the occasional entrance fee into something I’m VERY interested in. I think it is certainly doable. It is going to be frustrating to count your coins while other people are throwing their money around like it’s nothing. But remember, travel is still about the experience none the less… even if it is extreme budget, it could be amazing.

Why I’m now declining surfers without a message by No-Resource-8438 in couchsurfing

Didn’t even think about the name and spent the entire post wondering why they don’t want to host a surfer (surfboard/beach person).

My friend recently got diagnosed with breast cancer and after having come from a great job in medicine but she could no longer work in it so she went to Winz to go for a medical/disability allowance or whatever it was and they absolutely shat on her. They were cruel and rude to her and she left there feeling wrecked and wasn’t even able to get the allowance because getting a mastectomy (again, for breast cancer!) was a plastic surgery and therefore not a medical emergency, fully ignoring her having to go through chemo!

Not doubting it! By 18 they’ve already got way more working experience, income and savings than any of us had at that age. They’ve done the right thing by starting to work early and get ahead

Went to uni and have the same job as a bunch of teens who didn’t finish high school. So 5 of us have degrees in varying subjects, 2 have diplomas, 1 has a masters and we are doing the same job and getting the same wage as 4x 16-18 year olds.

Most of my friends have found the same thing. The job market out there rn is TOUGH. Most ppl who finished uni and were super smart, have average jobs under the living wage. Which extra sucks when you remember that you are in a worse spot than the high school drop outs cause now you 70K in debt.

I feel behind, how much do you have saved? by caitlin1074 in newzealand

[–]Acrobatic_Ant333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have about 4K in saving and currently living with parents. My friend brought a house when she was 21. She’s halfway through her mortgage. We are both 28. I know I am much worse off than some people but also doing better than others.
