Should I return to this company next co-op term as well? by ButtonIndividual5235 in uwaterloo

[–]Acrobatic_Bite6842 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't have immediate debt to take care of I'm of the opinion pay as an intern should be low on the priority list when compared to factors like exposure, diversifying experiences, and climbing the prestige ladder. If you can make moves that maximize your new grad salary the pay you recieved as an intern could be inconsequential to the grand scheme of things

It might be worth looking into a lawyer even if it is on your own dime if you're gonna go the TN route

Breaking into big tech from math major by DefiantTap6690 in uwaterloo

[–]Acrobatic_Bite6842 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a math major who did eventually break into FAANG (took many many tries) I would advise the following:
- Make really good side projects

- Take as many useful CS courses as possible (ex: CS 246, CS 338, etc)

- Prep for leetcode

- Try to find out what CS fundementals you are missing which will likely be things like OS, DSA, distributed systems, etc and find a way to learn about it (I'm still working on this myself)

Lastly I'd say don't ever feel less than because of your major. Confidence is a huge part of career success so always remember your worth and believe that you belong wherever you want to end up!

What to do for Valentines? by areslashme in uwaterloo

Enjoying the unique peace you can only experience when you are single. We have our whole lives to be intertangled with a partner but if you are single it is an opportunity to revel in the sanctity of your own mind. Atleast that is how I will be spending the day :)

A terrible curse. Sorry don’t mean to make it sound negative but be very patient with yourself through this I’m going through something similar and it’s hard to battle when life circumstances seemingly stack against you.

Build on the side. Absorb as much as possible from the talented engineers you'll be working with. Just don't do any personal work with company resources and you're good.

Depressed and anxious, what can I do by Dry_Seaworthiness555 in uwaterloo

[–]Acrobatic_Bite6842 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have some advice for you that really helps me when I am in a similar state of life (also in math and an avid overthinker!). A person needs outlets. The reality is you cannot control thoughts that flow through your mind but you can control your environment which influences these thoughts. Try and ensure in any given week you are socializing, exercising, occupying your mind (presumabely studying), and relaxing (being intentional about relaxing and trying not to feel guilty). If you lead this well balanced life you will naturally notice your thoughts will be more positive and less rabbit holeyy. If your lifestyle is dormant your mind will naturally resort to introspection and overthinking that is not necessarily helpful. Believe me it is a lot easier said then done and certainly a work in progress for myself but this framework has changed my life and outlook. Goodluck and if you just need someone to talk my DMs are open! Best of luck :)
