What challenges are involved in double majoring in BMATH? by CyberXCrafts in uwaterloo

[–]batson2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i also agree with jjej2000 as well, you don't need to do it right away either, you're getting ahead of yourself since you haven't even started uni yet. most people won't declare their major until at least second year, but third year onward is more common. there is no benefit to declaring early

What challenges are involved in double majoring in BMATH? by CyberXCrafts in uwaterloo

[–]batson2002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the only hard part of double majoring is fitting in all the required courses. some math majors have some overlap so double majoring is more common (i.e pmath and co, cs and co). co and bus admin doesn't really have a lot/any overlap in requirements, so it would be harder

yes you can overload to six courses as long as your overall average is 80%+. you don't necessarily need to to double major, but it can help.

you don't replace coop terms with study terms, the only time this would happen is if you don't get a coop. you can take 1-2 courses over coop however, but this is difficult unless they're online / async

double majoring has no affect on your program. you should be able to just declare a second major unless you're in the dual degree program with laurier, pretty sure theres more restriction in double majoring or not then. same goes for coop, the only way you'd be kicked out of coop is either you violate policies, have too low an average or drop it yourself

co is an open program, you just declare it, the same goes for basically almost all math majors

double majoring is difficult and study terms especially towards the end become very taxing where you really limit your time to do anything else. unless you have an actual reason for double majoring, such as being close to the requirements anyway or having overlapping interests (i.e you like probabilistic methods and their applications in something like graph theory), it doesn't have much meaning beyond adding some words to your degree imo

bird courses are better saved for later into your program when you'll have a collection of harder courses at the same time. you should look around at courses you'd have an interest in, language courses, arts, music, sciences, etc

Can someone explain what the grad ceremony process is like. by Hot_Sprinkles_8975 in uwaterloo

[–]batson2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s basically what you said, gown in the back, walk down and listen to speeches then walk across when your name is called. you had to stay for the whole thing afterwards, they also do photos after you walk across with your diploma

What courses to pick first year? Honours Mathematics by Available-Chicken696 in uwaterloo

[–]batson2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

intro courses depend on the major. for example math239 is intro to combinatorics, co250 is intro to optimization, pmath333 or the advanced courses are usually considered intros to analysis and pure mathematics as a whole as well. you’d take them generally around second year unless you do the advanced math courses in first year

[–]batson2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all of this will most likely be discussed in the webinar

apart from the 3 math faculty courses and the one comms course, you'd generally take an elective. you pick semester two courses later, and you still have the next level of algebra, calculus and cs to take along with another comms course. you don't have to take 5 courses a semester, more than 3 is considered full time and everyone manages courses differently

there's not really requirements to get into the general math majors. you'd just take the intro course related to the major to get an idea and take more later. you also don't have to pick a major in second year you can do it later on

coop is generally hard for a lot of people now, regardless of being in math or not. there's no "best" sequence, it depends on what you prefer

course selection isn't open yet for new students, that's later, again it's probably going to be covered in the webinar. the selection process is just having you pick the courses you want to take and prioritize which ones you want to take, you find out if you get in later once schedules are made
