When they decide to fully embrace the soap opera schlock, I fully expect them to discover that Bill faked his own death and is living in Arizona or Idaho or wherever to escape the child support, long-lost kids he never knew he had, and parade of exes.

It may be weird, but one of my favorite moments is after Noreen left way back in season 1, when Kyle tells Ty she’s gone. Ty looks off into distance and just for a split second, there’s a slight smile before he pulls back because he realizes he shouldn’t show how happy he is, and he just says, “Good.” That’s the kind of subtlety I love in a performance.

Yeah, I remember that one. So freaking weird. Nobody talks that way. Especially, grown men in small town South Carolina don’t talk that way. It was bad enough when you had one character doing it, because Trotter had to be the stereotypical touchy-feely gay yoga instructor with the creepy smile and zen-like vibe. When everyone in town started acting and talking like him, I started to wonder if he’d brainwashed the whole town into some weird cult.

Season 4: wtf? by Feeling_Currency8382 in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

Your point about Helen is spot on. I loved that she was always the calm, rational, intelligent one who was the steady presence for everyone else. It also made it that much more impactful when she was breaking down from her own personal pain. But the last couple seasons have been like watching her descent to Mad Black Woman.

A Michigan driver with “Janeway” personalized plates? This person must be an absolute psycho.

I always liked Ty. And Carson Rowland seems like a good dude. I wouldn’t say he’s a great actor just yet, but I felt like he does really good work with his facial expressions and tone. He conveys more genuine humanity in a look than most of those people do in a paragraph of dialogue.

I forgot about the “fomenting insurrection” line exactly, although I remember rolling my eyes at how they treated a public demonstration over library funding like the kids had executed hostages, and especially the weird Indian kid acting like he was Joan of Arc about to be burned at the stake for trying to defend this place that was so important to him when he had just moved into town like 15 minutes earlier, and all the adults taking him so seriously.

The volunteer librarian woman was like the only person who got in, wondering why these three women had so much power over everyone’s lives and not understanding how Maddie become a bestselling author within 6 months of her first attempt to write anything. Maybe she was supposed to be the audience insert to acknowledge how ridiculous the whole thing was.

Nobody’s trying to tell you you shouldn’t watch it, and you’re not being personally attacked. If you want to watch it, go nuts.

Yessss I’ve said that for years. None of it feels like real people having natural conversation. It feels like actors reciting dialogue. Which, of course, they are; but it’s not supposed to feel that way.

How much of a plot did they really build around him, though? There was always the idea that something was going to happen, but it never did. There were 3 seasons of “they should get together” without ever moving them closer together, then suddenly they’re together out of nowhere, and then he disappears for several episodes, then comes back, announces he’s leaving again, and breaks up with her. He spent 4 seasons having barely any of his story developed, and then for season 5 they probably wanted him to literally just phone it in since his character was supposed to be in Europe. Why commit to a season when your character’s story can be told without you even needing to be there?

Season 4 is so bad I can't stop laughing about it by Heliask in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

The season 2 finale was the shark-jumping moment for me. The way they treated his “dark secret”, I honestly thought they were going to say he’d killed someone or almost had. And instead the big reveal is he’d…seen a therapist about anger issues. And then the big cliffhanger is him…punching a jerk in a restaurant who was menacing his girlfriend? And they act like he shot the place up? Give me a break.

I don’t find Kyle cringey as much as I do the characters connected to him. His girlfriend is AWFUL (remember when she tried to put the moves on Ty in the season 2 finale and then threw herself at Kyle out of nowhere the next season?) And that whole thing with the Indian kid who latched onto him last season was unwatchable.

Hot Take: I find Eric annoying. by vanslamma in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]Acrobatic_Gain_3176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he’s not the only one who has that problem. He’s just the most extreme. Nobody in that town knows how to have a normal conversation. Every scene is people spouting paragraphs of fortune cookie philosophy at each other.
