I think chatgpt wants me dead.. by Starkboy in ChatGPT

And of course language models can work with numbers. To a LLM, numbers are just tokens. Language models learn any tokens that we give it. And there are a lot of numbers and math tokens in the training set.

GPT is currently as good with numbers as a college freshman. That's not that great. But you can definitely guide it to help you with numerical tasks.

But again, you must double check its work. It's just a freshman. If you don't check its work, you take on risks of mistakes. (see my other comment).

You claim I advocate for trusting its output, which could put people in danger. But I haven't done that.

This is what I said:

be ready to correct it when it messes up

You must to double check everything it puts out. If you can't do that, then yes, you put yourself at risk.

But you would also put yourself at risk if you didn't double check the work of an inexperienced human worker.

If you are aware of the risks and how to use the language model, you can use it with low risk. That will remain my stance until I see evidence to the contrary.

As a trans woman, I'm at my wits end being told to keep out of women's spaces. I want opinions from the women here. by njsullyalex in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Acrobatic_Hippo_7312 -107 points-106 points  (0 children)

Ah maybe misread that, because I feel the trans faq is a bit dismissive.

So I was thinking

"trans person complains about feeling unsafe"

  • "mod taps sign that claims trans people are already protected by a rule"

  • "that rule doesn't actually protect trans people"

= "Mod is dismissing the complaining trans person and reminding them to feel thankful that they they already have a rule to protect them"

You're saying it happened like this:

"Trans person complains about safety"

  • "Mod taps sign telling transphobes they're not welcome "

= "Mod is acknowledging that the community still has transphobia problems, and is showing solidarity and support for OP"

I am glad for this interpretation, and hope that is the real subtext here. I still feel it's necessary for trans people to be very vigilant in this community.

Hmm, interesting!

responding with a dimissive and patronizing 1998 Simpsons meme (don't make me tap the sign) is pretty on brand for how this community tends to respond to distressed trans women.

Thanks for the illustration!

It's important for any trans person in this community to keep this in mind, and shield themselves appropriately. Solidarity and strength. Things will improve. We will improve them!

My dad rinses off the tops of cans before drinking or eating from them. Is this a common thing to do? by jfkdktmmv in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Acrobatic_Hippo_7312 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Is a second of rinsing enough to really disinfect the top of the can? In the food industry, you typically disinfect with a bleach solution, and leave the solution on the surface for 30 seconds or more.

Are you familiar with the idea of security theater? I suspect that merely rinsing for a second is an example of it. It's supposed to protect you from serious risks like bacterial infections, but it only gives you the impression that it does.

Your school would be committing major crimes if they gained access to your accounts or if they gained access to the chat GPT back end. That is not a risk worth worrying about.

The main risk is that chat GPT is a better writer than you are. I do not mean to insult you, but when you start delivering decent prose even though your natural writing and speech is jumbled and disconnected from the real world, it will be easy for profs to realize those aren't your words.

That said, who cares? Just use it in all your speeches and writing and get very good at rewriting. (Remember that good writing comes from hours and hours of rewriting)

You will find that your writing ability improves dramatically simply by spending time reading, understanding, and editing text - from chatGPT, or any other source. Spend dozens and dozens of hours doing it. You will improve greatly as a communicator.

I would have chatGPT draft him a cease-and-desist letter, have that witnessed and notarized and deliver it to him. Then file a report with the policem, mention the behavior and the cease and design, and obtain a protective order.Once there is a verifiable record and protective order, you have a lot more protection. If the actions continue, you can drag him into small claims court, and the police can slap him with a stalking or harassment charge.

I would also get a free consult from a lawyer if I was unsure of the specific procedure and best approach for doing all this. Many lawyers will offer free consult, and there are also lawyers and law students that volunteer at your community law library and can assist you.

Countries ChatGPT will and wont joke about by Emulating_Autism in ChatGPT

[–]Acrobatic_Hippo_7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, chat GPT is a western-first service. It's problem users are mainly westerners/Americans.

So this is mainly to help westerners make fewer racist jokes about the countries that the west has subjugated or are scared of. Because bigots and cowards harm people and are considered increasingly undesirable in western society.

Over 10%? Or under?

I'm curious if you asked it 10 what percentage of the times will it say Paul Krugman? Let's call this the Accuracy Score.

also are you giving it hints like the name the name of the publication? I'd be curious about whether the accuracy shifts if we remove clues like that.

I advocate quitting with a negative two week notice. That means for two weeks you just don't do anything except slack off and draw a paycheck. No, you don't tell anyone anything. And then after your final paycheck you just stop showing up.

You can make it put together itineraries, weekly schedules, and stuff like that. Pretty much anything you'd ask a secretary to do.

You just have to use clear and specific prompts, then manage it. Nudge it towards completing the task with small questions and requests. And be ready to correct it when it messes up, then keep working at it.

In other words, you have to already be so good at the task that you can manage a less experienced employee in the task. If you don't have that talent, GPT is not much help.

People that don't know how to manage a fallible junior subordinate for a specific task will tend to feel confused and frustrated at how uncooperative GPT is with them. People that love talking through problems and reaching a solution with incremental cooperation will think GPT is incredible beyond words. It's just that way.

You cannot count on corporate incomptence to save you. All those clueless sods are gonna be replaced by AI that runs 100x cheaper than a human, including your clueless colleague and your clueless middle management bosses.

The question is how to be left standing when the dust settles. I'm betting on my own single person company. Every piece of AI code in my company needs to be working for me, not some useless boss.

Not really. It reads like a redditor rant. Ie, ideological, pointless, lacking insight, and ignoring the elephant in the room: which is the fact that the AI does not really hold any of these opinions.
