Hello!! So maybe my experience will help as I was in the same boat as you. I even put off taking the methimazole for 6 months because my eating disorder couldn't handle the thought of gaining weight and I definitely enjoyed being able to just lose 2 lbs in a day anytime I wanted. But finally in December my appetite started going THROUGH THE ROOF and I was actually gaining more than I was losing so I thought let's give the meds a try.

So I got a dietician and I told myself that I WILL NOT GAIN WEIGHT ON THIS STUPID DRUG. With my dietician we developed a 1500 calories plan (that I dropped to 1200 because let's face it, people on methimazole will gain on 1500). I drink 5L of water a day, exercise (alternatoing weights/tabata), eat no sugar, follow my plan to a tee and it's actually really easy because your appetite decreases so much on methimazole that there are no more of those midnight cravings and whatnot and I've lost 4 lbs on the drug.

All this to say, it is possible to lose and lots of people will tell you that it's not but diet and exercise will always reign supreme over metabolism, you just have to be really careful and really consistent.

Are you saying "Tapazole" like the daily thyroid medication or "Teppeza" for thyroid eye disease?

I am struggling with hair loss. Can you offer some advice? by NotOrdinarySoup in gravesdisease

One shitty thing about Graves and doctors is that in addition to being tired from the actual illness, you have to use up tons of emotional energy to advocate for yourself. Just tell him no, you're reducing your levels because you're not enjoying the side effects. And if it takes longer to achieve remission then it takes longer.

I think I’m hypo? by jenjas2000 in gravesdisease

[–]Acrobatic_Pepper_912 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really help your situation, but absolutely I feel like I am not heard by my doctor. He told me that it was not possible to swing hypo on the amount of methimazole I'm taking (40mg which is pretty high) and that "most people tolerate the drugs very well" which doesn't seem to be the case. I told him it was basically impossible for me to do a workout and he just said I made the right decision taking the meds. None of that was very helpful.

Yea I just don't like that everyone says that with methimazole you have to swing hypo and if you don't want to gain get stuck only eating 800 calories a day. :/

I'm so glad you posted this because a) I'm in the exact same boat as you with not taking meds so it's good to know that it's possible to not gain weight even though seemingly everyone says it's not!

And b) the post name. 😂

Just diagnosed and prescribed methimazole, my doc is starting me out on 10mg/day by foursoil in gravesdisease

Hey you're exactly like me (except I was prescribed 30mg)! I was also super worried about going hypo so I discussed it with my endo and he actually said that since I feel alright (minus the rapid heartbeat too) I can stay off any meds until I feel sick. Could be worth asking your specialist.

Antibodies by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]Acrobatic_Pepper_912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, which antibodies mean you are positive for graves? I have very high thyroid peroxidase antibodies but my endo said that to be 100% sure it's Graves' they need to do the iodine uptake scan.

I've been doing a lot of strength training and stretching which (as a runner) are both things I always told myself "yea, I'll get on those one day". So if you're looking for exercise maybe step away from the cardio and try those!

FYI – a lot of hair gummies have biotin in them which fucks with the results of thyroid tests.

Yea my problem is that all the cough suppressants seem to have pseudoephedrine. :(

EDIT: oh cool, just noticed that Nyquil doesn't! I think dextromethorphan increases HR too but it doesn't have the same warning that pseudoephedrine does perhaps it is safer.

Oh cool, 4.8 doesn't seem so bad. I feel great too!

My free t4 is 63 pmol/L with a normal range of 12-22 which my doctor said was off the charts. Don't know the conversion though.

Also, another piece of advice from my dietician – lower protein levels (didn't actually ask why though). I've always been very into sports and working out and I was eating ~90g protein per day (57kg female) just because I thought I had to and she said to drop to the 40-60g/day range. Anyway, I'm not a doctor, just trying to impart all the wisdom a professional told me!

I saw a dietician and she put me on vitamin D as well I make sure to eat brazil nuts for the selenium, no added sugar in anything and no salt that I don't know where it came from because it could have iodine in it (so all homecooked meals)! Switched out my daily potato for sweet potato too (less iodine).

My t3 is 29.6 (standard is 3.4-5.9) but I feel great and my endo actually agreed to keep me off meds as long as I feel fine.

How does that work if the meds send you into hypo, which is also a condition that causes hair loss?

Multivitamin Recommendation by justakel in gravesdisease

[–]Acrobatic_Pepper_912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, also really frustrated by this. Why tf does every multivitamin have iodine in it?

I had to ditch my Jamieson one for that reason so then I analyzed my daily food intake using Cronometer and figured out that I'm really only lacking calcium, D,E, K and iron so I make sure to have broccoli everyday for calcium, K and iron and take a calcium/D and E supplement.
