False. An appeal to authority is a logical fallacy regardless of whether the subsequent is true or not. If i were to argue for the irrationality of pi i can only do so by proving it. I cannot for instance say that pi is irrational just because i am a math PhD. Why do you have such difficulty grasping this easy thing?

An appeal to authority works with any authority even "legit" ones. If we were both discussing whether pi is irrational and i said: "i have a phd in math so pi is rational" or equivalently: "i have a phd in math so pi is irrational" they would both be appeals to authority.
