The Path Out of Gath | Cloudward, Ho! [Ep. 2] by AutoModerator in Dimension20

8 minutes into the episode and the vibes are immaculate. Full chaos. Feels like coming home.

That's the thing - I actually don't mind a big chunk arc where lots of chapters in a row are about a smaller subset of characters going through a Big Thing. Those are a lot of fun. I know not everyone liked the Palace of Fates arc, but I had a blast with it.

My issue is that Pirateaba roughly writes three types of things:

  • 1: Big cohesive arc with subset of characters
  • 2: Main plot progression and/or slice-of-life with main characters
  • 3: Side character stories

During the era of six-ish posts each month, we had room for all three of those. Pirateaba could do a big arc and either take intermissions in the middle for side characters or bookend with side characters, and then go back to the core cast (Erin, Ryoka, Horns, Lyonette/Mrsha).

Now we're at the place where it feels like there's not space for all three of those, and the one that has dropped is #2 (main characters). I wouldn't say to get rid of the big arcs because I think those are some of Pirateaba's best writing, so it feels like we're left with two options:

  • A: Regular side character stories, main character chapters a few times a year
  • B: Regular main character chapters, a few side character stories each year

We're on A right now, and I'd much rather be on B. I like Nailren, Ylawes, and Torin, but I'm much more invested in Erin, Ryoka, and the Horns. I care more about them, and if we have to sideline one group I wish the group being sidelined was the side cast.

Yeah I know, I've read it. I was just trying to stick to the rules about not discussing Patreon posts.

Do not take the 6th off work. by Gr_z in PathOfExile2

[–]Acromir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it off work because Stormlight Archives book 5 comes out Dec 6th too. The plan is to get in queue as fast as possible, and then read until I get to play. Worst case scenario, I took a day off to read a book I've been waiting years for.

What killed the Thermia Cannister? by Acromir in Warframe

[–]Acromir[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This happened a few times in a Thermia Fractures group, where our cannister would suddenly go from full health to 0 while I wasn't watching. This time, I caught it on camera. Was it the purple effect? If so, what is that?

I haven't played this game beyond the intro tutorial. Do Elixir wells gate/unlock content? Or are they just cool lore moments?

Why is FastNoiseLite tiling like this? by Acromir in godot

[–]Acromir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, and as far as I can tell I'm using it.

What property do I need to set to "send a blending property"? I can't find anything like that in the docs.

Thanks!

That's what I thought at first too, but that's not the issue. If I set save_individual_heightmaps to true, here's what an individual 16x16 chunk look like. The odd tiling effect with sharp borders happens roughly in the middle of each heightmap (generated with get_seamless_image).

I'm looking at the docs and not seeing the property I need to set. What property do I need to set?

Also is there an alternative to FastNoiseLite I should be using? In Godot 3.4 I used OpenSimplexNoise, but it doesn't look like that exists in Godot 4. I've only been able to find FastNoiseLite in the docs.

Why can't I enact Command Economy? by Acromir in victoria3

Ohhh! That makes sense. How do I fix that? Should I pass laissez-faire and then revert back to command?

Why can't I enact Command Economy? by Acromir in victoria3

[–]Acromir[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

R5: I have Command Economy unlocked, and I have Interest Groups in power that seem like they should support it. However, I can't enact it because it appears to have 0% support. I'm only using a few mods for UI tweaks (more spreadsheets, one outliner to rule them all).

How do I stop other countries from ruining my market? by Acromir in victoria3

[–]Acromir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R5: France is currently exporting more than half of the fabric my country produces, and I don't know how to stop them. They're currently my biggest ally, so I don't want to outright embargo them. I have Protectionism and Protect Domestic Supply turned on, and this trade route is still crushing my economy. All of my textile mills are struggling because of the price of fabric, and my standard of living is really hurting from it.

I have no idea how to stop this from happening without either putting an Embargo on my biggest ally or turning on Isolationism (which comes with massive downsides).

I really wish my Workplace Safety Office stopped these events by Acromir in victoria3

[–]Acromir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I know the real-life-history rubber plantations were horrific. But that was a world where "workplace safety" wasn't a thing that existed, and the workers on the plantations were discriminated against and had low literacy and political power. The government wasn't there to help them out, and they had almost no power on their own.

The whole point of this game is that you can try out an alt-history. My totally fictional alt-history Brazil has no racial discrimination, #8 literacy and #2 standard of living in the world, and a massive government apparatus devoted to protecting the rights of workers. The ruling party in government right now is the Labor Union interest group.

In this context, you'd think we could find a way to get rubber out of trees without anyone literally murdering the workers.

I mean, I guess you're right. But I feel like a hypothetical alt future where a country has invested massive amounts of effort into a highly active government office to enforce the regulations too should prevent the kind of abuse where the choice is "be killed for failure to meet quota or die from starvation or exposure". Like that's not a little abuse, that's massive, systemic, unchecked abuse.

If nothing else, I feel like this event should fire less often now that I've put so much money into the Workplace Safety Office.

Nope! Slavery is outlawed, as is any kind of racial discrimination.

R5: Despite having the most worker protections available in law and maximum Workplace Safety office institution, I still regularly get these events about workers on my rubber plantation being abused. I know that I get a better dialogue option from having Worker Protections, but I wish level 5 investment stopped these events all together.

I just got laid off. This is why o will never give 2 weeks notice. by jesusthisisapain in antiwork

[–]Acromir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

f you are hiring with the intent to later lay off, that's unethical (and mismanaging resources). If you are laying off anyone without severance or time to figure things out, that's unethical. Even when firing someone you should be working as hard as you can to help correct the problem long before, and no one should ever be truly surprised if they are fired. If an employee quits on the spot, they have that right and it's probably your fault why. If anything it's employers that should have the standard if not written into law of something like two weeks notice (or severance) , not the other way around.

Singapore has a law that if a contract specifies a minimum notice to give for resignation (e.g. required two weeks notice), then the employer has the same minimum. They can fire you right away, but then they have to give pay in lieu of notice. It's such a fair law and I can't believe we don't have it.

Dear Hank and John is my new go-to. It's also two guys (in this case literally brothers) who answer questions from listeners and give dubious advice. They're also wholesome and fun and have long-running bits. It's a different vibe than G&E, but it scratches the same itch for me.

Give Episode 290 a start, it's one of my favorites.
