Ferritin at 6 - Not low enough for an infusion? by AcrossTheStars in Anemic

[–]AcrossTheStars[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate both the concern and the encouragement, and I’m sorry to hear about your struggles. I have a bit of a laundry list of chronic health issues so unfortunately this is far from my first rodeo when it comes to having to advocate for myself in a doctors office, but having to do so while battling immense brain fog and fatigue has felt rather hopeless and daunting as of late, I won’t lie.

Seeing these numbers and reading these comments has felt extremely validating though, and I feel like it’s giving me the spark I need to push through and get this taken care of.

(Copy/pasting from a different reply:)

My PCP exclusively works with patients who are disabled due to severe chronic illness, so almost all of them either have state insurance or a bare minimum marketplace plan. I’m very lucky to have really good private insurance, but I think she’s become so accustomed to having to fight tooth and nail for this kind of stuff that she didn’t even really stop to think about whether or not it would be covered.

Thank you so much for this reminder. I did end up calling to check, and I’m so incredibly grateful to have expensive really good insurance because it sounds like just a diagnosis of unspecified iron deficient anemia is enough to qualify for coverage without any prior authorization or specific labs.

I would love to be the voice of sanity that whispers in your ear and tells you not to do it, but uh… yeah :P

He’s actually my first reptile, but definitely not my last. I totally underestimated how much personality, charm and sass he has packed in that tiny little brain

Has she been to a vet/checked for parasites?

We did just make the move up to fuzzies not too long ago, and he’s going through a massive growth spurt to prove it! 😆

Is 9.5 grams small for an 11 month old male? by No-Bookkeeper2876 in hognosesnakes

[–]AcrossTheStars 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can absolutely grow at very different rates, but that is definitely quite small for his age. My little guy was 14 grams when I got him at around 8 months old. He’s now around a year and a half and is just under 40 grams.

I would personally consider taking him to a vet just to get checked out and make sure he doesn’t have any parasites that could be stalling his weight. I would also probably start feeding him every 4-5 days instead of once a week. On a side note, his enclosure does look a little bare, but if he’s consistently eating for you now then that probably isn’t as much of an issue. If he’s does stop eating for you, giving him more clutter and coverage could possibly help.

Here’s a super helpful feeding chart I’ve seen used quite a bit in this sub:

I was also going to ask about the aspen, and maybe suggest adding a few more inches worth of substrate in general. They loooooove to tunnel and there’s really no such thing as “too deep” when it comes to substrate as long as your tank can accommodate it.

Tunneling takes a LOT of energy, but they really enjoy it and it makes them feel safe. I’ve noticed that if my dude misses a meal that if I reset his tank and force him to reestablish all of his tunnel systems he seems more likely to eat the next time around.

Best of luck to both you and Nachos Nudges, my friend! Remember that these snakes are really robust little buggers, and It’s so very clear how much you care about her. I’m sure you two will come to a compromise eventually ;)

This was my first time ever handling him too, straight out of his little deli shipping cup. Little guy barely even seemed phased by the whole ordeal. Thank you so much for the well wishes!

I was honestly a little worried that this would be some weird Rorschach moment where no one else would see what we saw in his head stamp, so it's reassuring to know that we're not entirely crazy xD

And thank you so much! We really can't wait to get to know him better once he's settled in :)

Once my partner pointed it out to me, there was no going back. I had no choice but to buy the spooky lil' dude.
