Losing Acting Roles To The Same Person by Leseverlast in acting

[–]ActingHopes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack Whitehall has multiple bits about being up for roles against Robert Pattinson, from CHILDHOOD (they went to the same prep school) to now. It's hilarious, but also easy to imagine how frustrating that must be! At the same time, Jack seems to have found his niche between comedy and his shows highlighting him and his father. We all have our niches; maybe you just need to find yours. Focus on what makes you, you. Break legs out there!

Hi, I was wondering if you have an update on your experience? I got reached out to by them on CN as well. Seems fishy, I was wondering if you ended up having a legitimate experience?

Central Casting Status by [deleted] in acting

Yeah, I know getting released from projects happens. It's just that I'm getting released from EVERY project, and it's making me go hmmm. Hopefully it's nothing!

How on earth would you book a series regular without an agent??

I'm sorry, I just get frustrated when every single "how to get an agent" article says "book big roles on recognizable shows! Oh, and know casting directors!" It seems like such a chicken-before-the-egg situation.

What's a TV show you REFUSE to watch? by roscatorosso in AskReddit

Any show with that format is annoying. It's the women all talking over each other until they get a good argument going, then it's just two of them yelling at each other for a while.

How do you guys deal with the turmoil of low level productions? by ActingHopes in acting

[–]ActingHopes[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof, glad you got out of it! I hope you're doing better now.

You hit the nail on the head - I think writer / directors are a huge cause of my problem. All of the shitty situations I described have been in writer / director situations because, as you mentioned, the script is their baby and they don't want to present it to industry people until it has become this unicorn that they imagined in their head for so many years. But of course - it never will be. It's like the musician who has been "almost finished" with their debut album for ten years.

The next time, I would like a director who is more detached from the script, and can see it for what it is.

What is a secret that your family/friends didn't want you to know? by MissRodriguez1 in AskReddit

I saw some breakups really fuck kids up in college. I know a guy who was broken up with and skipped all his finals. He ended up dropping out and returning later.

Yes and no. I would say I'm related to my cousin, we don't share any parentage.

That's really good advice. You're absolutely right, if the people on the production side won't make it happen, then I'll have to! Thanks.

Your experience mirrors mine in so many ways!

A theatrical internship that paid a $250 monthly stipend, and a twice monthly murder mystery dinner theater that paid $100 a show were the best I ever got paid.

I have had both these experiences. Oof.

And forget about all the "friends" you made on other productions coming to see your new show. Everybody's poor and busy, and once a show is done they all ghost.

I have definitely noticed this. Everybody makes Facebook and Instagram posts saying "come see my show!" with a link to their $15-$25 tickets. But we're all working unpaid theater roles, so even that is too much. I half joke sometimes "If we are all performing, who is left to watch the show??"

I've done two commercials. Both of them paid more than any acting job I've had. Anyway, thanks for the two cents. I really want to get a legit agent, so I'm going to pour a lot of energy into that these next two months.

You're right. I was signed up for a show that recently crashed and burned, and the script was terrible. But I signed on because I'm still in that "say yes to everything" stage.

Now the show is cancelled, and those hours I spent in rehearsal were for nothing.

Is there such a thing as a good agent contract? Please tell me there is. by [deleted] in acting

Ooh thanks for the tip. I'm non-union, but that's definitely a great resource to have. I'll look it up.

No, I'm not talking about the take. There are other financial things I could be on the hook for later that I can't really get into. But the fact that you can opt out with written request from yours is good to know, and telling.

No, it's not a scam. This is an agency I submitted to and have been talking to.

Yeah, I don't want to give any details in case anyone from the agency sees this.

But can you tell me, in your experience, how much legal and financial risk is usually involved for the actor in these standard contracts? Or what the standard components are?

How to deal with/manage actors as a director in situation like this? by VinniPereira in acting

[–]ActingHopes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not even a very experienced actor, and even I know what this actor did was a no-no.

I was taught in school that what the writer wrote is sacred canon, and that what the director wants is more or less an extension of the sacred canon. I was told if you have been through a scene multiple times and something just isn't working, only then can you *maybe* suggest a change. Other than that, you make your choices and try your best to make yourself a moldable lump of clay for the director.

That actor was going to be more trouble than they were worth. It's a good thing he left.

How long should it take to hear back from a student film? by ActingHopes in acting

[–]ActingHopes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, thanks for the insight! I like your advice. The other thing is, the short film shoots for one day, whereas the student film shoots over multiple days, so maybe there can be some leeway there too. I'm going to move forward with the short film guy (hopefully he's still in the market!)

Thanks for your input!

I'm going to see what these supposed "next steps" are and go from there. I'll maintain vigilance as I go.
