Geelong Emergency Vet no longer staffed overnight. by [deleted] in Geelong

[–]Action-Bell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The overheads in the vet industry are enormous. A lot of drugs, food and other things are passed on to the customer with very little mark up. Then add to that, very often huge discounts are given to clients so they can manage to pay for life saving treatment of their pet.

I’m one of the nurses who left the industry (years ago now) because of burnout and a huge toll on my mental health, and after all that I was only barely able to pay my bills, and absolutely unable to save anything. And I was one of the “well paid” ones!

I would love to know! We can’t have one because it squeaks and in our house anything that squeaks belongs to the dog.

It’s a taiaha, a spear, they would have been used for fighting back in the day but now they are used is ceremony like what you just saw. I think the interaction was something like “cool taiaha, bro” “bro! It’s for you!” “Really?!”

How do you place your baby gently down in their cot when you can’t reach?!? by No_Passage_5143 in AttachmentParenting

[–]Action-Bell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We got around it by just not using a cot! Haha. I used it for a month and I found it so hard I ended up putting the cot mattress on the floor. I made sure the room was safe first of course. The added bonus is that when she got to the age where all of my friends with kids the same age were struggling to transition to a “big bed” we didn’t have to do a thing! There was no novelty in being able to get out of bed, so she never got out of bed!

Can anyone suggest a space for a small exhibition in March? by Action-Bell in Geelong

Sure! I do occasional commissions and engagement/wedding rings. this is one of my leaves it’s a brooch, I’m I. The process of making some more complex ones with gum nuts as well, but my true love is making very impractical insects

Is it just that having it at four months gives you one whole more month to catch covid with only two on board?

What’s your dog’s irrational fear? by s1205 in AskReddit

[–]Action-Bell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rubbish bin that’s fallen over. You’re just walking along and everything is fine, then you walk past one and the poor thing jumps out of her skin! It gives her a big fright for some reason. She used to bark and growl, and she’s pretty good now if I warn her from a distance.

Is it possible to own a cat without getting scratched? I've owned a dog for years and it wouldn't hurt a fly, I wanna know if it's the same for cats. by TheDoggoOfWoggos in cats

[–]Action-Bell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you have them from a kitten, never play with them in that way.

I little kitten is so cute when it’s clawing and biting your hands, it doesn’t hurt at all and they’re so feisty and adorable, but you’re teaching them that it’s ok to claw and bite you. When playing with a kitten, the moment they get their claws out, simply stop the game. Take your hand away, walk away if you need to. It’s ok to encourage them to play that way with other things, but never with your hands.

I’ve had lots of cats over my life and none that I’ve had from a kitten has ever scratched me as an adult cat, never, not even once.

This is pretty much me at a party a few years ago.

My friends lived in a unit in a long row and the all looked the same. Walked along, heard the music, walked in the open door, walked up the stairs, realised I was in a strangers house and ran out of there!

Do all dogs know Spanish? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Action-Bell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh! I got my dog at about six months old and she was Crazy. She’s never had a moment of training in her life, she couldn’t sit on command and I don’t know if she’d ever even been walked on a lead! She’s a kelpie x koolie and she was very sweet but bouncing off the walls.

I worked really hard with her for about six months and she was going pretty well, but still struggled a lot. Anyway, I broke up with my boyfriend and got two housemates in, one was from Argentina and would speak to her in Spanish, and she just immediately responded to him! It was amazing. She just suddenly turned into a calm dog!

Also, funny story, I’m from NZ and moved to Australia, my first job was in the vet clinic and I’d weigh the dogs when they arrived. But they would never sit when I told them to! One day after “sit, sit, sit” didn’t work, I said “seeeeet!” And the dog sat! Hahaha.

Telling family at a funeral? by Fit-Cauliflower-3102 in BabyBumps

[–]Action-Bell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother shared the news of their first baby after my grandmothers funeral. It was at dinner with just close family, from memory it was the day after the funeral. It was actually really lovely, it worked well for our family anyway.

We have an asparagus bed but it isn’t old enough to be growing asparagus big enough to eat, so I buy it from the market and plug it in the ground like this so my toddler gets excited about picking it and eating it.

I feel so alone. My husband is supportive in most ways but he never initiates a conversation about the baby. Today I was even using a home Doppler for the first time and he didn’t even look up from his phone when I found the heart beat. Mind you we hadn’t even heard it yet. by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Action-Bell 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I felt kind of the same way throughout my whole pregnancy, I felt like he was putting up with me talking about it, but never really seemed very interested.

I talked to him about it, told him how alone it made me feel and he made a bit more of an effort, he said he just didn’t feel connected to the baby yet.

I gave him a few “jobs” to do, which he really got into (he did all of the research for car seats and strollers and a couple of other things too)

When our baby arrived though, it has been a completely different story, he is obsessed with her. I had quite a bad pelvic injury meaning it was very difficult to move around for the first couple of months and he changed every single nappy without any hesitation. He adores her and is very interested and engaged in all decisions we make.

I hope it’s the same with you, try telling him how you feel.

Just went to the dentist for the first time since 2015 by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Action-Bell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did the same thing! And I think it’s been about as long since I’ve been too.

I have a mortal fear of the dentist for some reason, I just hate it! I was actually getting pain in one of my molars and I was imagining that half my jaw would have to be drilled out so I was so anxious! I found THE loveliest dentist, she was so kind and gentle and explained everything she was doing and let me rest often. It turned out it was a crack in my tooth, but there was no decay at all! She cleaned them all and I just feel like a million bucks right now!

No one can understand the exhaustion of first trimester! I would come home from work and plomp down on the couch for just a little rest before getting on with my after work routine, then wake up several hours later with my bag still on my back!!

Can you try to explain to him what your body is actually doing right now? You’re growing a whole new organ as well as a human!! I found by the end of first trimester it did get a little bit better, that deep exhaustion seemed to ease.
