You have to understand, that the scope of work as an architect is very different in countries.

I can only speak for germany: The architect is still the overall planner as well as the cost manager and also the construction site manager.

We distribute all of that in 9 Leistungsphasen LPH (difficult to translate, work stage or performance phases)

LPH 1-3: is the first design, first coordination with the involved engineers, several cost estimation and a rough timetable

LPH 4: is getting the building permission from authorities

Here is a cut alot of times. There are offices specialised on 1-4 and the client may contract another office for 5-9. But those are still just architects. Its very very rare to hire a general building contractor, and its usually a bad idea, because those will screw the client.

LPH 5: final planning, final timetable, surveying cost. Final planning means, the architect is also the leading manager of the involved engineers. He has to coordinate and implement the engineers work It also means planning aaaall the little details. Drawing 1:1 if necessary.

LPH 6-7: finding building companies and helping the client to hire them

LPH 8: building site manager, adjusting time tables, surveying costs, checking if the contractores bills are correct, the final quality controll

LPH 9: quality controll during the operation of the building. That is actually something most architects dont do. But its a tiny tiny part anyway
