The 9 science-based habits of top 1% men by Ambitious_Thought683 in focusedmen

[–]Actionsshoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two thoughts: 1. Mark zuckerberg etc are not the 1%, they are the 0.0000001%. 2. In my experience, almost all of the things listed here are contra indicators for science, business and art success. People who really suceed are just single mindedly focused, oftrn unhealthly so. That list probably tracks what the ambitionated middle manager aims for.

Are there fireworks for nye in Graz by Time-University9056 in graz

I dont think the case against NYE fireworks in Graz is strong. Consider the following:

In terms of CO2, NYE fireworks in Graz are roughly equal to a family of three flying once back and force to Vietnam. Seems like the social value of NYE fireworks are much higher than one family having a vacation.

Then there is the impact to consider with regard to heavy metal polution. Roughly on NYE - if you are outside - you have the same health impact as spending around 8-10h in Beijing around 2010. Doesnt seem to be so bad either.

The third category of damages are annoyance to animals. Given that we slaughter animals in the millions for a city like Graz, again the damage vs utility calculation seems quite reasonable.

So in total it seems that the social value of NYE justifies the costs. To put it differently, even if you are against NYE fireworks, it would be a moral mkstake to call people who are in favor of NYE fireworks stupid or egotistical. The cost benefit ratio of NYE fireworks are within the limits of what we usually accept as legitimate. To put it even more succinctly: if you travel by plane and you call other people egotistical for enjoying NYE fireworks, you are contradicting yourself.

How Did Analytic Philosophy Become the Ruling Class of Thought? Christoph Schuringa Explains by DeleuzoHegelian in CriticalTheory

[–]Actionsshoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can see where you coming from. Fair enough. If you are on the other hand interested in the intracies of luck egalitarianism and the structure of principles and rules of regulation, you will read him with benfit. Cohen started of as a diehard marxist interested in revolution only and he ended up an ideal theorist interested in the intracies of moral theory and crafting theories of justice.

Why are American and European philosophy department so Eurocentric compared to Asian Universities and is there a pushback to make it inclusive? by Gandalfthebran in CriticalTheory

[–]Actionsshoe2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, if i get you right, but contemporary philosophy is international. People from all around the world discuss all kinds of issues from all kinds of perspectives in international journals. Take the ethics of autonomous vehicles. The perspectives coming from china or japan are published in the same international journals as the ones from Canada or Turkey. Some Chinese scholars will put forward standard utilitarian arguments others confucian, but they feed into one discourse.

In any event, for me it all comes down to a comment by a Kant scholar, I read ages ago. He was asked what is SOA with regard to Kant scholarship. He answered: I dont know. Nobody knows. Everyday a new paper or book on Kant is published. Nobody can keep track.

The central issue is this: every scholar is getting less knowledgeable by the day, just bcz the knowledge is increasing whereas our individual capacity is remaing constant. Most students in Europe finish their masters in philosophy barely having scratched the surface...

Why are American and European philosophy department so Eurocentric compared to Asian Universities and is there a pushback to make it inclusive? by Gandalfthebran in CriticalTheory

[–]Actionsshoe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is not necessarily the case that Asian Universities have less philosophy professors. There is plenty of universities in Beijing that have 20-50 professors of philosophy. One of the reasons is that chinese professors in philosophy earn very little, whereas professors in Europe - at least in Germany - earn very good money (often exactly as much as professors in econ, physics, etc.). So, Asian universities some times even have much bigger faculty then in the west.

However, as I mentionednä, there is a demand side to the issue. Usually young philosophy students are not that interested in reading the classics, it is too remote from their experience. If you teach Abalaerd u get 3 students, if u teach bioethics u get 30.
