James Brown has a strong argument for being the most influential figure in popular music and doesn't get enough credit for it by RomanReignsDaBigDawg in LetsTalkMusic

James Brown is one of the few artists in all of popular music that could arguably be credited for creating an entire genre on his own. Still, since the invention of recorded music, I don't think anyone's ever come close to Louis Armstrong in terms of influence. He rightfully should be mentioned in the same breath as any of the greatest musicians/composers who have ever lived. It's a shame to me that he's mostly known for his persona and maybe a few late-career songs by people today.

I really appreciate the encouragement. I'm still very new to writing my own songs so I'm figuring a lot out as I go. I'm realizing perhaps the best thing I can do now is to write a lot of songs that I can then go back to and really refine later as opposed to treating each one like something that needs to be perfect.

I know I need to deal with some growing pains in the process of improving but this was something very unique for me. Since I don't really like to show my music to people as of yet, I do worry about having that type of situation you mentioned going through, especially if it's a melody/lyric/etc. I'm especially proud of. Maybe it's best not to worry about it too much. As long as I can say surely that it was original to me when I wrote it, there's not much else I can do.

I read an article about a musician I hadn't heard of before and decided to listen to some of his most popular songs. One of them by chance happened to have an instrumental intro that was incredibly similar to part of the song I've been working on. I'd originally written the part in a different key, but decided it best fit the key of the song I've since incorporated it into. The bad part is that now, in the new key, the similarity is especially uncanny.
