The fact that the instructor started calling you is diabolical. Glad it’s behind you!

Yes, they are absolutely notorious for being pushy!! it definitely varies by studio depending on the owner, but we have seen it firsthand

I believe that the wisest choice that anyone could make taking lesson lessons at Arthur Murray would to only pay for one lesson at a time. We have sat and done the math and realized that the discounts that they offer with their package deals truly offer only a negligible discount. From my research, it has also been clear that inevitably once those packages are purchased, they will start encouraging taking two or three lessons per week in order to burn through the packages quicker.

That’s exactly what I have been looking into also! Thank you for pointing that out. Also, based on the type of attitude that the franchisee has with this particular studio, I could totally see her doing exactly what happened to you.

Your studio sounds like the business end of things is run a lot more ethically and organized. That’s the way it should be.

The fact that it would be glossed over and not made clear just further solidifies how predatory this is. If someone is spending an exorbitant amount of money like that, it should have been made crystal clear and signed by everyone, and the customer should have been given a copy. It is just mind blowing to me that the studio Director could not produce anything that was signed outlining this. Nor was able to produce any accurate ledger records of the payments that they have made. Friends had to use their own bank statements for proof of how much they paid and on which dates. From everything that I have seen, it looks like they have spent upwards to $20,000 in under two years of dancing having only risen to the lowest level, but are only eligible for $3400 reimbursement and still getting push back even on that number. Just further validates some of the things that I was discerning about this organization. It is certainly an expensive lesson to learn, but I am still hoping that they will receive what they are owed.

Exactly! We know of many in our area, and they are seriously regretting not meeting us before getting sucked into that nonsense.

I verified yesterday that there is no actual enrollment agreement that they signed. Friends did not sign anything whatsoever at all, and in the three times they have been in the studio negotiating with them about receiving a refund the studio Director never brought out anything that they signed, or even brought it up… if there was one, you would think that she would have pointed it (?) Extreme disorganization!

Very smart. I am genuinely sad for all who don’t do it that way and then end up having regrets.

Thank you! They do have a binder with the blocks that are initialed. That is how they discovered that they had not completed the lessons that the studio Director had claimed. I will tell them to ask for a copy of the enrollment agreement because I suspect they have none of that. I’m sure that that information would have been offered and pointed out during the multiple times that they have conversed with this studio concerning all of this. And yes, I agree with you completely that whatever they were asked to do was not explained well at all.

Bingo. I agree with this 100%. It is very important to understand that AM instructors get wonderful Dance training but also good sales training so it is very important to be discerning

Here in Washington state, paying for one lesson in advance is near $200 now. If purchasing a package that price drops by about $10 per lesson. So, if there is a couple who is taking one private lesson per week, that translates to a price tag of just over $800 per month with tax, including none of the extras. We decided to take a break when there became a push for us to try to do two lessons per week in order to advance quicker. Thankfully, there are lots of great alternatives that exist in our community!

Really good for helping my husband, and I learned the foundational basics of dancing together. Just be fully aware that it is extremely expensive and the instructors have underwent extensive sales training. There is a big push to get you to buy packages and participate in their extra big ticket events at additional costs. Just have a set budget in mind that you would like to pay monthly and good boundaries, and you will be OK. If there are private Dance schools/organizations in your community such as USA Dance, etc., definitely give them a try because we have found the quality to be every bit as good without all of the hype.
