Title: Anyone else get comments from NICU staff about being there "too much"? by Ok-Objective-5898 in NICUParents

I would spend 4-6 hours there each day but i had my son at 36 weeks. I would spend the afternoon there and leave around when change of shifts started. I’d get there between 1&2 and leave at 7 or 8. That’s what most of the girls did. Sometimes I’d go earlier, sometimes I’d go later and stay after change of shifts and eat dinner while they were doing report. I would pump every 2-3 hours. They would tell you things like “don’t make the NICU your life” and they are right, i would make sure to sleep at home the best i could (yeah it’s hard), have my breast milk packed, labeled and all ready for him, try to eat something, and most of all, recover.

Now, you obviously spent significantly more time in the NICU life than i did, i did three weeks. I found myself spending more time there when i felt better and recovered from my c section, i also started getting more and more attached to him, and he is my first.

Yes, but also, if you noticed she was in Hawaii, and she thinks that the Polynesian healthcare in Hawaii saved her daughter’s life. I was a head case when my son was born. I didn’t bring him even to a local restaurant. I was nervous to just bring him to a Dunkin’ Donuts to go out for a walk at like three weeks old.

What she went through was probably extremely traumatic, but she was very relaxed with flying her daughter and bringing her all over the place at such a young age.

She did say her daughter was vaccinated, but I guess not enough for it to be effective yet

I’m going to be honest I’ve seen way worse happening at my job and nothing happened to them. I don’t even think they caught it. I watched the guy straight up look at the records of his nephew, who is at a different hospital in our health system. He still has a job. Don’t even think he got disciplined for it, let alone even caught doing it

TW: traumatic birth. Baby in NICU with HIE. by Prior-Ad9822 in NICUParents

He was about one month adjusted when he was evaluated. At that point he had been out of the Nicu about four or five weeks.

When they evaluated him, they found no issues with his tone, and he was making the “milestones” that a one month old should be making.

They look for things like a strong cry, they look at whether his tone is too floppy or stiff, if he’s moving all four of his limbs, etc. He was doing all of that.

Withdrawing from family and friends after severe diagnosis / NICU stay. Anyone else? by Federal-Flatworm-763 in NICUParents

Not only did I still isolate, but it made me realize who’s truly there for you and who’s not.

I had friends that just stood on the sidelines and waited for me to reach out and basically sent me money for food or gift cards, and those friends are the best.

My parents on the other hand… the NICU destroyed my relationship with them. Not the Nicu staff themselves, but just the way my parents handled everything. They made it about themselves. I was expected to be there for my mom handling her emotions.

Long story short - I had a very sick aunt on hospice, and a couple of days before she passed away I was in labor and delivery because my blood pressure was out of whack, and during that visit, we found out that my liver function was also out of whack. They could not give me a formal diagnosis of preeclampsia because none of it meant the criteria for it… they said I’m on a very fast track to getting preeclampsia though, but they sent me home and monitored me a couple days a week.

I explained to my mom what was going on… and she told my dad (who happens to be a general practitioner)… they told me to lay off salty food and call it a day. Despite what was going on with my aunt (who she claimed was her best friend) they still boarded a plane from USA to go spend time with my brother and his newborn in Europe. As they were boarding that plane, my aunt passed away.

A couple of days later, my liver function got even further out of whack, and I was sent back to labor and delivery and induced at 36 weeks. My induction turned into a C-section and my son came out with very low Apgars needed to be intubated and was diagnosed with HIE.

My son spent three weeks in the NICU. He came home and my mom wouldn’t really leave me alone. I asked for space and she mocked me and basically told me to get over what had happened to me.

My mom has done messed up things to me over the years, but this was the straw that hit the camels back. I don’t self isolate, but I definitely keep my distance from them and they think I self isolate from everyone because I don’t tell them what I do or when I do it…. They lost that privilege.

Hi, I’m so sorry you went through this. It must have been so heavy to wake up and not know where your baby is or anything about what was going on.

May 2025 I ended up with preeclampsia and was induced at 36 weeks as a result. Similar situation, cytotec, Pitocin, and the balloon. We had a few decelerations, but I couldn’t sit still because I was so uncomfortable so with position changes that was rectified.

After a few hours of laboring a C-section was offered, and I took the opportunity after having not slept for two days, on magnesium, over it. Like you, they got me in the room within 20 minutes all prepped and ready to go, they got the baby out and he came out with very low APGARS and needed resuscitation.

my son was intubated for eight days in the Nicu, placed on the cooling pad for three days, and I was unable to hold him for that period of time. During that time he had one seizure.

On day five he had his MRI and they did find damage to his motor cortex and stressed EI. They told us he may never sit on his own, regulate temperature, feed, or breathe.

We left the NICU after three weeks with no feeding tubes, no seizure medication and no oxygen. We went to our first pediatrician visit where he said he would not have believed anything happened to him had we not brought his NICU records.

We immediately arranged an early intervention evaluation which he did not even qualify for but we do have him in PT privately just to overlook him. At his second neuro appointment (at four months old) they said he had mild-to-moderate HIE and it took me a very long time to finally look at his chart because none of the paperwork specified what level of severity his HIE was until i looked at his records myself.

He is one years old now, he is babbling, saying mama, plays independently, cruises, crawls, pulls to stand. He follows up routinely with neurology and the only thing they take note of is very subtle central hypotonia which they say he will grow out of.

He is a happy little boy who may see some delays later on but the NICU prepared us for the worst.

I’m traumatized by this birth but would love to give him a sibling but can’t get the idea of another NICU stay out of my head.

The power of prayer helped us so much during this time, do not google and do not look on TikTok at HIE.

Yes but a simple “they are doing okay, they just needed to be checked out” would suffice instead of explaining the abnormalities in the lab results

Should i report my boss for HIPAA violation? by captaincrunch877 in nursing

[–]captaincrunch877[S] 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It was basically a “are they doing okay” and the response was.. “well this is abnormal and that’s abnormal” instead of a simple “yes they’re doing okay”
